Tournament of
Champions Update:
Redondo & Compton Win--(December 12,1997)
Thank goodness, there's some basketball news somewhere else other than the LA Times today.
Redondo Union has been a team on a mission, ever since they were relegated to the Third Place Game in their own 46th Annual Pacific Shores Tourney. They won that game against a fine Mira Costa team (the other host school in the tourney) but had to watch as Fairfax won the Championship against Serra.
They won't be watching at the Tournament of Champions, at least not if Andrew Zahn, Marcus Moore and Tyler Hoffman have anything to say about it. Oh yeah, and not if the rest of the Seahawks too have anything to do with it.
Last night, the Seahawks finally beat the Long Beach Jordan Beach Jordan Panthers, who had just played the previous two days in games they had won by three and two points respectively against Mater Dei and Nogales.
Led by Zahn (6'-9" So C), Marcus Moore (6'-4" Jr G) and Tyler Hoffman (6'-2" Sr SG) , Redondo won fairly easily by 13 points, 70-57 in one of two semifinals played at Ocean View High yesterday. Zahn had 21 points, 10 of them in the fourth quarter. Jordan, which is now 6-2 on the season, managed to play the game closely, getting to within two points 54-52 on a Mike Newton basket with 3:16 to play. But over the next 3 minutes, Redondo went on a 14-2 run, led by Moore and Hoffman. Moore just drove and penetrated at will, scoring 13 points and 17 assists. Hoffman hit three 3-pointers and had 18 points for the night. Craig Calloway (6'-1" Jr. G) and Darren Peterson scored 15 and 14 points, respectively for Long Beach Jordan, which shot on 33% from the field and had 17 turnovers for the game.
Redondo, which is now 6-1 on the season, will play the winner of the Ocean View-Compton game at 8:00 pm on Saturday for the championship game. Long Beach Jordan. which drops to 6-2, will play for third against either Compton or Ocean View. We don't know much about Ocean View but we're betting that Compton will be playing for the Championship against Redondo, and that would be a great matchup.
Compton advanced in it's second round game Thursday, and tonight will play Ocean View at 8:30 at Ocean View.
On Wednesday, Compton beating up on the quick but outmanned team from Perris, winning 71-51. The Tarbabes just flooded Perris in the fourth quarter Thursday night, getting 18 points from DeAndre Moore, 20 points from David Hamilton, and 19 points from Tito Maddox. Maddox also had 5 assists, while Hamilton, who plays mostly with a vengance and a ton of energy, had 13 rebounds.
The game was never really close, and Compton led 33-25 at the half. While Perris managed to pull within 8 during the second half, Hamilton, Moore and Maddox just took over during the second half, as Hamilton hit 16 of his 20 in the second half.
Compton improved it's record to 3-0 on the season, and expects to advance to the finals. If they do, you won't want to miss it.
But if you do, don't look in the LA Times for the report. It won't be there.
