Update: Tournament
of Champions #2--(December 11,1997)
Wednesday night Jordan beat Mater Dei 69-66. Jordan seems to get caught in these exciting, very close games, and on Tuesday barely made it past Nogales, 70-68.
This game went into overtime, which had the crowd going nuts on a shot by Craig Calloway jumper from about 12 feet out with only 2 seconds showing on the clock in regulation. Calloway (6'-1" Jr. G) took a pass from teammate Darren Peterson, a junior foward, at the leftside baseline; he was open, and made the shot, and tied it at 60-60.
In the overtime, Jordan made the first four points, but Mater Dei tied it again on a free throw by Eric Soderberg (6'-7" Fr. F/C) with only 1:20 left on the clock at 64-64. Peterson was then fouled on Jordan's next possession, and went to the line with only 1:00 showing, making the front end of the 1-1, to give Jordan the lead at 65-64. Mater Dei got the rebound, missed two layup attempts and turned over the ball. Calloway then brought the ball up and Mater Dei wisely fouled with only 34 seconds showing on the clock. Unfortunately for Mater Dei, Calloway hit both shots, and the score was 67-64, and still only 34 seconds remained.
Mater Dei then ran a play designed to get the ball down low to Soderberg who mae the layup, and the score was 67-66 Jordan with only 12 seconds on the clock. Mike Newton then threw a pass the length of the court to Peterson, who laid the ball in for the score, and Jordan then led 69-66. Mater Dei calls a time-out, and Gary McKnight calls a play for, you guessed it, Steve Scoggin, who has the hot hand in the game, just as he did in the DeMatha game.
Interestingly, Mater Dei only needs a two, but Scoggin, who up until then had the hot hand with 26 points in the game, looks for the three which hits the front of the rim. . . bzzzzzzz. Game ends. Mater Dei 66, Jordan 69.
Jordan trailed early in the game, and at the end of the first quarter the score was 15-19 Mater Dei. In the second quarter, Jordan managed to cut the lead to a point, and the score at the half was 31-32. Neither team came out hot in the second half, and the scoring in the third quarter was sparse, with Jordan scoring 12 to Mater Dei's 9 points.
Peterson finished with 22 points in the game, Calloway 23, Matangi 7, Newton 5, Bryant 10 and Gathrite had 2 for Jordan.
Mater Dei's scoring was led by Scoggin who had a game high 26 points, Soderberg with 7, Mansell with 13, McGuigan with 2, Bayer 6, Imran Sufi had only 2 points, Bozeman 4, and Ryan Stacey finished with 6.
Jordan's gotta stop this kind of play. It can't be good for Ron Massey's health to win one game on Tuesday by only a single basket at the buzzer (Nogales) and then another the very next night in a tough overtime.
With the win, Long Beach Jordan pumped it's season record to 6-1. They'll play Redondo Union tonight at 7 pm in a semifinal game in order to determine who will play in the Championship game. The other game tonight features a rematch of the two teams that should have played each other in the Reebok Compton Tip-Off Classic last week, Compton and Perris. And from what we know about these two teams, either could win tonight, although Compton would be our guess to win this one. We'll post up the details later.
