Honolulu St. Louis Tourney:
First and Second Rounds--(December 29, 1997)

You guessed it, this one is in Hawaii. We're not there, but wish we were. So we'll do the next best thing: Tell you what others are telling us.

Like about Chaminade's first round success. Matt Chirba, Scott Borchart and Cayce Cook each scored 10 points, and Chaminade High controlled the boards, not surprisingly given that they've got a front line which averages about 6-6", against Sonoma Valley, beating them easily, 56-31, in the opening round of the St. Louis Tournament in Honolulu on Friday. Chaminade, which improved to 7-1, and which also won it's own tournament last week (our article on that one was sitting on the now-defunct hard drive which crashed during our recent trip, so we'll have to rewrite it), and which is ranked No. 2 in the LA Times' Valley Regional poll, outrebounded Sonoma Valley, 35-14. The Northern California team made just one of nine field-goal attempts in the first quarter, during which the Chaminade Eagles broke out to a 17-2 lead. Chaminade never looked back, and was scheduled to play Iolani of Hawaii in a quarterfinal on Saturday. We're still looking for the results of that one, and will put it up ASAP.

In other first round action, Orange County's No. 4 ranked team (again according to the LA Times Regional OC Edition) proved that they can do it without Jeffrey Berokoff, who could not accompany the team, due to other family committments. Sonora won decisively 57-27 over a much weaker Honolulu Kaiser team. Marqui Worthy (James' son) scored 10 of his 21 points in the second quarter as Sonora improved to 10-2 with the win, outscoring Kaiser, 20-0, in the first-round game. On Saturday, in the second round, Sonora High beat a strong Honolulu Punahou team 67-64. Deric Hillard scored 10 of his 17 points in the third quarter for Sonora. Marqui Worthy (James' son) added 17 for the Raiders, who are now 10-2 on the season, and , who advanced to the semifinals which will be played today.

On Sunday, (yes, they play on Sunday in Hawaii) Jeff Swan scored 31 points as Pacifica beat Myrtle Point (S.C.), 92-57, in another second round game. Swan, a senior guard, made five of 10 three-pointers for Pacifica (7-4). The Mariners also got strong play up front as forward Adam Rachlin had 19 and center Bryan Wislocki got 18. For those who don't know it or were unaware, Pacifica plays in the Garden Grove league with teams such as Bolsa Grande, Garden Grove, La Quinta/Westminster, Los Amigos, Rancho Alamitos, and Santiago/Garden Grove, most of whom are playing in local tourneys.

We're still trying to get some more stuff on this one, and we'll put it up as soon as the note in the bottle arrives.
