San Luis
Obispo Tourney:
Mater Dei is Coming--(December 5,1997)
As we reported yesterday and in our preview of Mater Dei, they will not be playing in the Reebok Vegas Christmas Tournament this year, because coach Gary McKnight doesn't think they are quite ready for that level of competition. From what we saw last night in Mater Dei's win over Crespi in the First Annual John R. Wooden Classic Inauguaral High School Invitational, they could probably have done pretty well even if they are a young team. But more on that later.
We don't have the game times or much other information on the San Luis Obispo Tournament that McKnight has opted for Mater Dei to play at instead of going to Vegas, but apparently it got underway yesterday, even as Mater Dei was otherwise occupied down in Anaheim. We do have one score to report on though from San Luis Obispo.
San Marcos, a team from the San Diego area (specifically the North County Conference, Palomar League) beat a team from East Bakersfield, 55-43. Sonny Oden of San Marcos scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead San Marcos to the opening round win in its season opener at the San Luis Obispo Tournament. Jordan McOwen grabbed nine rebounds for the Royals.``It was a great all-around team effort for the win,'' said Royals coach Chris Hantgin.
The San Marcos Royals will face the winner of the Burroughs-Ridgecrest vs. San Luis Obispo game being played in the at 8 p.m. tonight.
Here's the scoring:
