Slam Dunk to the Beach: Dominguez
Loses to Dunbar
--(December 29, 1997)

Dominguez is a good team. No, they're a great team. It's just that in the first round, Dunbar, from Baltimore, Maryland, was just a bit better. Dominguez lost 70-66 in the first round. Dominguez is now 7-2 on the season, after winning the South Lake Tahoe Shootout earlier this month.

But the Dons are in good company in the consolation bracket. Rice from New York City, which finished as the runner-up to Mt. Zion in the the 21st Annual Reebok Las Vegas Holiday Prep Classic, will play Dominguez in a consolation semifinal Monday, December 29. Anthony Glover and Tayshaun Prince matchup. . . power v. silk. Geez, we wanna be there.

In the first round game of the Slam Dunk, Dominguez was just out rebounded, despite the presence of 7'-0" freshman Tyson Chandler. Dominguez led 21-20 after the first quarter, and then gave back the one point lead at the half, and the score was tied 33-33. In the third quarter, Baltimore Dunbar outscored the Dons by 2, and even though Dominguez held a 7 point lead in the second half at one point, Dunbar just came surging back, and took an eleven point swing to win by four.

Tayshaun Prince did his usual spectacular job, scoring a game high 28 points and 8 rebounds, but it just wasn't enough. Junior guard Keith Kincaide had 21 points, but they were the only Dons in double figures. Willie Hurst ( 5'-10" Sr. PG) only had 4 points; Jaffus Haley (5'-10" Jr. G) only had 2, Tyson Chandler finished with 2, Walter Small (6'-5" Sr. F) only had 4 points, and the only other Don to score, Keith Brooks (6'-5" So. F) had 5 points.

There is some other information on the rest of the games played in the Slam Dunk tourney online at the "Newszap!" site. Since their articles do not appear to be archived though, we'll reprint the most current ones below. They may not be of major interest to everyone in SoCal, but then again, you never know. And for those copyright folks out there, read this: Fair Use. We still believe it's alive in the Ninth Circuit, even if there are some doubters out there. So the following is simply a not-for-profit, educational reprints:

Shootout at the Slam

One-day events becoming more popular at tourneys

LEWES - The Slam Dunk to the Beach boys basketball tournament has shown many signs of growth since its inception in 1990, boasting yet another larger-than-last-year field with 38 teams this year.

Tournament founder and executive director Bobby Jacobs would like to see each of those teams play two or three games in front of Cape Henlopen High's bleachers.

But because of high school guidelines around the nation, which Jacobs believes are antiquated, some teams can only commit to one game. Examples of such restrictions are limits on the number of games a team can play in one season, or in a tournament's case, in so many days.

That has led to a fairly new feature at high school tournaments all over the country - a one-day affair giving teams at least one day to perform under a national spotlight.

Hence Slam Dunk's Sunday Shootout, now in its second season.

''These are becoming more popular,'' said Jacobs. ''Some teams' opportunities to travel and play are limited. This gives those teams an opportunity for them to play, at least one game.''

One of Sunday's winning teams, Lebanon (Pa.), was gracious for the chance to be present.

''We were real proud to be invited,'' Lebanon coach John Barnhart said. ''You want to be able to represent yourself in a quality fashion, because we're with some very special people at this place. We don't do this week in and week out.''

Lebanon's fan support was also one of the strongest seen so far this weekend.

''We're always thankful for that. They always support us wherever we go, always supporting us everywhere,'' Lebanon senior guard Pat Daly said.

KNIGHTS FACE BUCS: In today's first game, Sussex Central battles Milford to decide third place in the Mayor's Cup. Tip-off between the Henlopen Conference rivals is scheduled for 9 a.m.

Two more Delaware teams follow, in the Governor's Trophy third-place game, as Salesianum goes against William Penn.

Tip-Off and Power third-place games are next, with the main draw's consolation round set to start at 4 p.m.

Based on national rankings released last week, No. 3 Dominguez faces No. 8 Rice, followed by No. 24. St. Pallotti and Paintsville.

The main draw's semifinals close out the day, with No. 14 St. Joseph-Notre Dame vs. No. 4 St. Patrick, then No. 5 St. Edward against Dunbar.

And now, here's the second one from Newszap!:
