Simi Valley Tournament: First Night--(December 3,1997)
So Rafael Berumen has been a bad boy. He got benched for missing a practice. He was probably over at Kurt Mjoens house looking over SoCalHoops and just forgot. So Coach Dean Bradshaw didn't play him last night. That's right. The big guy rode the pine. Too bad for all of those who came out specifically to see him.
Nevertheless, Simi still managed to pull off a pretty decisive victory over Rob Bloom's and Steve Miller's North Hollywood Huskies 76-50 (don't worry guys, we still love you). Simi is now 1-0 and NoHo is 0-2.
Ian Boys looked pretty good, and popped in 16 points and grabbed 12 boards. Simi Valley struggled a bit during the first three quarters, with 10 turnovers on sloppy and nervous play from the guards and their forwards, but managed to lock it up in the fourth quarter. North Hollywood showed impressive quickness with Dejon Lee hitting for 15 points, and Keron Wilkerson adding 14. Chinnua Wright struggled, hitting for only two, but Ronnell Johnson, a 5'-7" junior guard was impressive with 10 points, but Jonathon Hicks (6'-3" 230 lbs) only hit for a single free throw.
Simi managed to correct the turnover problem in the second half, going from 10 to only 2. Simi Valley trailed, 13-10, at the end of the first quarter before leading, 30-26, at halftime and, 46-37, at the end of the third quarter. Simi opened the fourth quarter with an 18-4 run to take a 64-41 lead with 4:15 left. Boys scored four points during that stretch and 6'-4" sophomore forward Brett Michel had four of his 20 to go with 14 rebounds. Michel and Angelo Mosesso each had 3 three-pointers for Simi Valley, and Bryan Zumo hit two in the fourth quarter.
In other games on the first night at Simi:
South Gate defeated Granada Hills by only a point 48-47: Junior forward Adrian Garibay hit two free throws with one second left in the game to give the South Gate Rams a tough victory over the Highlanders in the first round. Garibay scored 10 points while Ronald Johnson and Ozzie Espana poured in 12 each to lead South Gate.
Hart defeated El Camino at Simi 70- 60, with very strong games from J.T. Stotts and Jeff Whitmore who each scored 24 points for the Hart. After leading, 33-29 at the half, Hart went on a 21-10 run in the third period to take a 54-39 lead. P.J. Reyes hit for 17 points and Kamal Hoke added 13 for El Camino.
Also at Simi, Newbury Park defeated Palmdale, 70-57. Dan Bobik, who has committed to BYU, scored 23 points for Newbury Park.
Games at Camarillo High:
Chatsworth 62, Notre Dame 58--Montae McFarland hit nine of his total 15 points in the fourth quarter, including two clutch free throws to give Chatsworth the lead and the victory. Chatsworth trailed, 50-48 early in the fourth quarter and then went on a 10-2 run to go ahead with a 58-52 lead with 3:33 left to play. McFarland then hit three baskets, including a three, and also assisted on another three-point play to bring Chatsworth over the top before scoring the free throws with only 9 seconds left on the clock. Cody Pearson had 17 for Notre Dame, which is now 0-1; Chatsworth is 3-0 and off to its best start in years.
Also at Camarillo, Santa Paula defeated Canoga Park 81- 77--Joe Rizcio scored an astounding 44 points to lead Santa Paula past Canoga. Jammie Harris had 34 points for the Hunters. Canoga is now 0-2 and Santa Paula is 1-0.
In the host game, Camarillo beat Monroe, 60-50. Jeff Stuteville contributed 15 points to help the Scorpions (1-0) hold off the Vikings (0-2). Damien Ritter and Robert Ramos each scored 14 points for Monroe.
At Camarillo, Chaminade easily defeated Santa Barbara, 78-53. Scott Borchart, a 6'-7" freshman, had a great time in his first game for Chaminade, hitting for 21 points and grabbing 17 boards, as Chaminade just crushed Santa Barbara.
