San Fernando Wins Saugus Shootout--(December 7,1997)
In an exciting overtime game, San Fernando and Devon Montgomery, who was named the Tournament MVP beat Antelope Valley High 71-69, on a missed three point shot from AV's Josh Speaks at the buzzer. Luis De La Rosa led San Fernando with 18 points, and Devin Montgomery added 14 points.
San Fernando gained the lead with only a little more than a minute to play when Devon Montgomery hit a free thorw shot, to bring the score to 70-69. Luis De La Rosa hit on another free throw with 29 seconds remaining to bring the score to 72-69. Mike Page also was one of the top scorers for San Fernando, popping in an additional 16 points for San Fernando. San Fernando's defense was very tenacious, and held AV scoreless through the remainder of the overtime. Speaks did manage to get off the final shot at the buzzer, but it missed.
In addition to San Fernando's great pressing and trapping defense, AV really lost the game at the line, making only 19 of 41 free throw attempts. Antelope Valley is now 3-2 for the year. Jourmaine Prater and Speaks, who was selected to the all-tournament team, both scored 17 points for the Antelopes. In addition to AV's poor performance at the line, AV also squandered a halftime lead of 36-35 even though they were outscored in the second quarter, 24-15. AV actually outscored San Fernando 18-21 and still led going into the third quarter by 4 points, 57-53. San Fernando "won" the fourth quarter 14-10, tying the game, and sending it into overtime.
San Fernando is now 5-0 on the season, and appears to be every bit as good as most preseason polls predicted. SoCalHoops congratulates both teams for their fine play, and special congratulations to Tournament Champion San Fernando and Tourney MVP Devon Montgomery.
In other games last night at Saugus:
Third Place:La Canada 56, Saugus 50:
Matt Moore, an All-Tournament Team selection scored 17 points, and Ian Sullivan hit for 12 for La Canada as the Spartans took third Place in the Tournament. La Canada is now 4-1 on the year with the win, while Saugus fell to 2-2. La Canada initially jumped out to a 23-10 lead in the game, but then went cold, and they were outscored in each of the following three quarters. Matt Bradley and Colin O'Hara each scored 13 points for Saugus in the loss, while Nic Echevestre added 10 points.
Fifth Place: Valencia 62, Oxnard 56:
Jerrohn Jordan and Matt Pawlak each scored 17 points for the Valencia Vikings, who improved their record to 5-1, to win Fifth Place in the Saugus Shootout. Fabian Leon and Eskias McDaniels each added 11 for Valencia, which outscored Oxnard, 19-8, in the third quarter, coming back from a 33-27 halftime deficit to take a 46-41 lead in the third quarter. Damian Tafoya scored 18 points, and Jeff Fouchey added 11 points and seven assists for Oxnard in the losing effort. Oxnard's record now falls to 2-2 on the season.
Seventh Place: Alemany 51, Saugus JV 47
This was a sorta, kinda, maybe seventh place game, because Bakersfield Stockdale High, which was supposed to play in the game, couldn't make it up over the Grapevine and the Tejon pass because of El Nino related weather. Simply put, the roads were impassable, especially on a team bus, so the Saugus JV squad got to play. Being the good hosts that they were, they lost, but not without giving Alemany a very tough time.
Alemany was led by the scoring of Brett Bell, who hit for 12 points, while Mike Murray and Jason Addcox each added eight points. Alemany's record is now 2-3 on the season with the win. Jerome Edwards of Saugus was his team's high scorer with 13 points. Alemany jumped out to a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and stretched that to a 28-22 lead at the half. Saugus cut the lead back to two at the end of the third quarter, and Alemeny managed to score just one more point than Saugus in the final quarter to hang on for the win.
Ninth Place: Quartz Hill 68, Canyon 65
Chris Hebert scored 12 of his game high 26 points in the fourth quarter to rally Quartz Hill back from a 10 point third quarter deficit, 47-37. Quartz Hill opened the fourth quarter with a 24-9 run to take the lead and the win. Russell Garcia had 14 points and Mario Grimm added 13 for Quartz Hill. Quartz Hill is now 3-2 on the season while Canyon fell to 2-3 with the loss.
Justin Orefice scored the Cowboys' first 13 points and finished with 17 points, seven assists and six steals. Mike Reardon added 16 points for Canyon, including four three-pointers, but missed a three-point shot with three seconds left in the game, which would have tied it and sent the game to overtime.
Eleventh Place: Highland 65, La Canada B-52
Frank Jimenez had 11 points and six assists for the Bulldogs, who are now 1-4, in the 11th-place game. Dawon Lane had 10 points for Highland, which outscored La Canada, 24-6, in the second quarter. John May had 16 points and five steals for the Spartans, who are still winless at 0-4.
