Joe Shipp
Out For A
Month With Broken Bone--(December 5,1997)
One of our sources has just e-mailed us with news that Joe Shipp (6'-5" Jr SG/F) from Fairfax High, is going to be out for about a month, having broken a bone in his leg. He did not play last night in Fairfax's victory over Mira Costa, and he will obviously not make the finals of the Championship game between Serra and Fairfax. Bummer. Get well soon Joe.
Fairfax still has enough firepower to be exciting, so there's still a reason to get over to this game. The only problem is that other than Greg Jefferson Greg Jefferson (6-5 Sr SG), there wasn't much scoring last night against Mira Costa. But you'll still be able to see the rest of the Fairfax bunch at the final on Saturday at 7:30 pm at Redondo Beach Union High, including Flinder Boyd (6-0 Sr. PG/SG), one of the best on the west coast, who has reportedly committed to Dartmouth next year, as well as Stanley Thorne (5'-8" Jr. G), Jason Morrissette (6'-4" So. F), and Tommie Johnson (6'-4" So. F).
And for those who want to know the ugly details of the score we reported earlier, Fairfax beat Mira Costa, 41-37. Not a great game to watch, and apparently you didn't miss much by not being there. Greg Jefferson had 21 points, which was more than half the final number of points put on the board by Fairfax. How bad was it? The score at the half: A ridiculously low 13-13 tie. Two touchdowns apiece and a missed extra point.
You'd think that with a 35 second clock, the scoring would be going up. We've seen Pee-Wee park league games with higher scores. Apparently from what our correspondent tells us, Greg was the only one who could really hit anything all night, and both teams only shot about 20%, simply running up and down the court trading bad shots. It did make for a heck of a high rebounding game though what with all those missed shots.
For Mira Costa, Jesse Boyd (6'-9" Sr C) got 19 points, also one more than half the total points put up by Mira Costa.
