Crenshaw and Westchester Sweep in Philly--(December 8,1997)
As you've probably guessed, we're in SoCal, not in Philly, so we've had to rely upon newspaper accounts of this one. But again, we want to thank "Elgee" for letting us know about the Pooh Richardson Classic held this last weekend in Philadelphia. We already reported on Crenshaw's game against Ben Franklin, which they won, and Westchester's game against Overbrook of Philadelphia.
Now, reverse the roles: Crenshaw and Westchester both complete a sweep of two of Philadelphia's finest boys' basketball teams. Crenshaw did it by defeating Overbrook on Saturday, 93-85, in the inaugural Pooh Richardson Classic last night at Ben Franklin. And Westchester did it by beating Ben Franklin 70-56 in the nightcap game.
Crenshaw was again led by the sharpshooting of guard Brandon Hawkins who had 22 points. Crenshaw was able to take control in the third quarter and hold off the Overbrook charge over the final eight minutes. Overbrook received standout offensive performances by Rahim Washington with 29 points, and Donnell Feaster who had 21 points and 10 assists, but Overbrook simply didn't have enough firepower to stay with Crenshaw. As we earlier reported on Friday, Crenshaw edged out the host Franklin Electrons, 82-80, on a jumper with only 2 seconds showing on the clock. Westchester didn't have nearly that much trouble with Franklin, beating them by 14.
Richardson, a Franklin graduate, former UCLA star, and current Clippers, sponsored the tournament by paying the travelcosts for Crenshaw and fellow Los Angeles rival Westchester.
Congratulations to the Crenshaw and Westchester teams.
