Santa
Barbara Tourney: Second
Round Results--(December 29, 1997)
Here's some more stuff on the Santa Barbara Tourney from Saturday's games. We were waiting for the official stats (not just Shantay's) and we got them. Courtesy of the Santa Barbara News-Press. We're still waiting for Scott Garson to come through with the promised reports, but for now these will do.
As we reported before Dos Pueblos beat Channel Islands 72-70. With its big men in foul trouble or gone, Dos Pueblos High turned to its big little man, ShanTay Legans, to win Saturday night's basketball game against Channel Islands in the Santa Barbara Classic. Legans, a 5-foot-8 junior point guard, did not disappoint. He scored 14 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter as the Chargers held off the Raiders 72-70 at Dos Pueblos to remain unbeaten in the tournament.
In other games, (see below) San Marcos, Santa Barbara and Moorpark all won, improving each to 2-0 in the tournament. San Marcos beat Thousand Oaks 82-53 at San Marcos while Santa Barbara routed San Jose Academy 85-34 and Moorpark beat Bishop Diego 84-55 at Santa Barbara. The tournament gets back underway today, Monday with the completion of pool play after taking Sunday off, and concludes on Tuesday with the Championship and consolation rounds.
Legans hit two free throws with 1:01 to play to put Dos Pueblos ahead 72-67 and the Chargers survived a last-second shot by the Raiders to improve to 8-2 overall. "Coach said to pick it up in the fourth quarter,'' said Legans, who scored 25 points on Friday. "He told me to take it over." Legans drove the lane repeatedly in the final quarter, using a variety of physical contortions to slip in shots and draw fouls. He played the whole game without rest, hit on 9-of-16 shot attempts and also had five assists.
"ShanTay really stepped it up for us,'' DP coach Phil Sherman told the News-Press. The Chargers needed everything Legans had against Channel Islands, which came into the game with an 8-1 record. The Raiders aren't big physically but what they lack in height they make up for in overall speed and quickness. And they used that combination to aggressively attack the basket, penetrating into the lane to challenge DP's 6-7 center Dan Hoefer and 6-6 forward Alex Jenkins. Both players had four fouls before the end of the third quarter and each fouled out before five minutes were gone in the final period. "It was hard to play without Dan and Alex,'' said Sherman. "They were in foul trouble from the beginning. It was like they were gone the whole game."
Channel Islands could also shoot. Dwight Sattiewhite, who scored 28 points Friday, hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter and four for the game as he totaled 22 points. The Raiders also pumped in three 3-pointers in the final quarter, including one by Franklyn McKesson that made the second 72-70 with 40 seconds to play. Dos Pueblos tried to run the clock down but turned the ball over and Channel Islands called a time out to run a final play with 12 seconds left. "We made some crucial mistakes - turnovers and not guarding guys on 3-pointers,'' said Sherman. "It's tough when you have no scouting report on a team. We thrive on having teams on tape and preparing for what they do." As time ran out, McKesson tried to find an opening along the baseline and got close enough to spin a shot off the backboard that rolled off the rim. "We wanted to run a play to Dwight, but they did a good job of covering it, so we called out another play and it almost went in,'' said CI coach Gary Abraham."We played pretty well, actually. Dos Pueblos is a good team and we wanted a good test against a good team on the road." Hoefer managed 11 points and seven rebounds in his limited time for the Chargers while Jenkins had nine points and eight rebounds. Julius Samuels had 14 points for Channel Islands and O.J. Thomas added 12. "They had a good team,'' said Legans, "especially Thomas. He's a very good player. This is a good win for us."
