Saugus Tourney Update: Finals Tonight--(December 6,1997)

The Saugus Championship Game is tonight at 7:00 pm at Saugus, and the Third Place Game is scheduled for 5:00 pm. Here are the games:

Saugus v. La Canada at 5:00 pm--Third Place
Antelope Valley vs. San Fernando at 7:00 pm--Championship

The Championship game will be a great opportunity to see AV's Tez Brown and Roger Price match up with Devin Montgomery (6'-3' G), and Tyrone Purnell (6'-7" F/C). We won't be able to be there because we're already committed to going to the Simi-Chaminade game, so if anyone sees the game, send a report.

AV advanced last night by beating up on Saugus Friday night at Saugus in a seminfinal game of the Saugus Tip-Off Tournament, 76-61. In the other semi-final game in the Championship bracket, San Fernando handily beat La Canada by 11 points, 59-48. AV, now 3-1 on the season, has won this tournament twice and was the runner-up in 1994.

The high scorer for AV was senior forward Josh Speaks, who hit for 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. "We're a very young team," AV Coach Tom Mahan, said of the team which has only two returning varsity players. "But we're athletic and we learn quickly." AV Forward Roger Price, a senior, also hit for 19 points and had six assists, while Steve Edwards and Tez Brown each had 11 points. Saugus' leading scorers were forward Matt Bradley, who had 21 points and 10 rebounds, Nic Echevestre with 14 points, and Colin O'Hara who had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

At the end of the first half, AV led by 4, 17-13, but at the half the lead had switched to Saugus, who lead 32-28. AV went ahead and never looked back late in the third quarter when Price blocked a shot by O'Hara, grabbed the rebound and passed the ball to Speaks who ran the fullcourt and slam-dunked. In all, AV had 18 offensive boards, and forced 11 turnovers from Saugus in the last six minutes of the game, and Saugus never really got back in it.
