Saugus Tourney: San Fernando
Beats Canyon in Quarter-Finals--(December 5,1997)

Two games are set for today in the Semi-Finals of the Championship round at Saugus. They are:

San Fernando v. La Canada
Saugus v. Antelope Valley

We're not certain of the game times, so call Saugus High to find out if you're plannng on attending.

Here are the results of the Second Round in the Championship Bracket:

San Fernando 60, Canyon 48:

Devin Montgomery scored 21 points on Thursday night to help San Fernando to a 60-48 victory over Canyon in the second round of the Saugus Basketball Tournament. Montgomery, who transferred from Ribet Academy, a Southern Section Division V-A school with an enrollment of under 100, scored 25 points in a first round victory on Tuesday over Highland. San Fernando, which is now 3-0 on the season, didn't play well at the beginning of the game. Canyon was leading 17-8 when Mike Reardon hit a three-pointer late in the first quarter. Canyon, which is now 2-1 relied in the first games on the fine shooting of Steve Ernesse, but he was pretty much off during the second half of the game, and Canyon had real difficulty coping with the San Fernando pressing defense. San Fernando led at the half 33-28. Defensive pressure by Luis De La Rosa and Sean and Bryson Atkins, and eight points by Montgomery was the difference. "They didn't really have anybody to guard [Montgomery]" San Fernando Coach Mick Cady told the LA Times. "But not many teams do." Tyrone Purnell, San Fernando's 6'-8" center, had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Justin Orefice scored 12 points for Canyon, but made only 11 of 24 free throws.

San Fernando will play La Canada tonight in the semifinals.

La Canada 70, Valencia 42:

Junior guard Ian Sullivan tied a tournament record with seven three-pointers in La Canada's quarterfinal beating of the Valencia Vikings, who had, only yesterday, been ranked as the No. 3 Preseason Pick in the Valley Region by the LA Times. Guess they had an off night.

Ian Sullivan finished with 27 points for La Canada, which is now 3-0, and the team overall made a total of 12 three-pointers. Matt Moore added 13 points for La Canada. For Valencia, Jerrohn Jordan had 17 points, which was playing without injured Royce Minor and Manuel White, or guard Jason Richardson, who was suspended (we believe for disciplinary reasons).

Antelope Valley 62, Alemany 48:

The Antelopes, who are now 2-1 led, 39-20, at the half and never looked back, in this pool-play victory over Alemany, which hasn't won a game yet this season and is now 0-3. Josh Speaks had 15 points and five assists, Tez Brown added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Roger Price contributed 11 points and nine rebounds for Antelope Valley, which is trying to win its third consecutive Saugus tournament title. Mike Murray scored 13 points and Jason Addcox added 11 for Alemany.

Saugus 78, La Canada 52:

Brad Cleveland of host Saugus scored 19 points, and every single member of the 10 man Saugus squad managed to score against a team consisting of mostly La Canada varsity reserves. Nick Boone of Saugus had 12 points, and John May added 16, while Greg Swensen had 12 and Don Williams scored 14. Saugus is now 2-0 on the season, and will play Antelope Valley today, to determine the other tournament finalist.

In the Consolation Bracket:

Quartz Hill 62, Stockdale 55:

Shawn Lett made four three-pointers and finished with 27 points and six steals for the Rebels (2-1) in a consolation game. Jason Tomlin added 12 points and seven assists, and Chris Herbert scored 12 points for Quartz Hill, which outscored the Mustangs, 15-4, in the second quarter.

Oxnard 82, Highland 74--Damian Tafoya scored 17 points and Eric Fong and Jeff Fouchey each added 16 for the Yellowjackets (1-1) in a consolation game. Humberto Zamaro had 20 points, and Wendell Bonner and Jon Moser each scored 13 for Highland (0-3).
