San Diego Nike Tourney: Day Three
from Pat McKinney--(December 30, 1997)

Our friend Pat McKinney filed a report on Monday's games in the San Diego Nike Tournament, being played at Torrey Pines and Cox Arena. Pat maintains the University of San Diego High School Dons Basketball website, and will (hopefully) be reporting on high school hoops in and around San Diego during the year, in addition to keeping us all up to speed on how Luke Walton, Abramowitz, et. al. are doing. Here's his report, which also appears at the USDHS site.

Day Three at the Nike National Prep Classic

By Pat McKinney

Day Three of the Nike National Prep Classic offered more outstanding prep action and some excellent individual efforts. Victories by Rancho Buena Vista and El Camino last night set up a semifinal match-up between last year's defending Division I and Division II champions. Rancho Buena Vista (10-1) beat Torrey Pines 70-54 on the strength of a 12-0 run to begin the second quarter which pushed the score to 24-12. El Camino (7-4) defeated Mountain View of Bend, Ore. behind 16 points from Jason Williams and 15 points and 13 rebounds from Marcus McGill.

Charlie Mercado of Vista followed his 47 point performance against Centennial of Bakersfield with 43 against John Muir, but his team fell 98-85.

#3 Rancho Bernardo defeated Ocean View 59-55 in overtime, paced by 21 points and 13 boards by Rei Rivera. 5th ranked St Augustine downed Upland 64-59 and received 32 points from Andre Porter.

The semifinals move to the brand new Cox Arena at SDSU tonight and include match-ups between JW North and St Dominics, St Anthony vs Fremont, Jesuit vs Chaparral, and Garfield vs Crenshaw.

#2 Horizon 62, #9 Poway 42. Notable: Zack Jones did not play for Horizon, but Detrick Watts picked up the slack with 14.
