Pacific Shores Semi Results, Finals Set--(December 5,1997)
The Championship and third place games of the 46th Annual Pacific Shores Tournament are set for Saturday, December 6th at Redondo Union High in Redondo Beach.
Third Place Game: Mira Costa vs. Redondo at 6pm
Championship Game: Serra vs. Fairfax at 7:30 pm
Don't miss these games, they'll be great.
In last night's games, Serra beat Redondo, to advance to the Championship 66-63, while Fairfax beat Mira Costa in a low scoring game 41-37.
We didn't get a chance to see either of these games, because we were otherwise occupied at the Pond of Anahiem watching the First Annual John Wooden High School Invitational, about which we'll have a lot to say, but we did get a report on the Serra-Redondo game from a friend and here are some of the details:
This was a very close game between two very well-matched teams, including good pairings at the guard spots between Davon Johnson (5'-10" Sr G) for Serra, and Marcus Moore (6'-4" Jr. G/F) for Redondo, and at the center positions between Andrew Zahn (6'-9" So. C) for Redondo and Aerick Sanders (6'-7" So. C) of Serra.
For Serra, Johnson hit for 25 points, including 9 free throws, and was driving and dishing and shooting well last night, and played very good defensively. Aerick Sanders had at least 5 blocks (mostly of Zahn's shots), and scored 7 points and 8 boards. Tyler Hoffman of Redondo also played very well and had 15 points. Earl Lewis (6'-5" Jr. F) of Serra contributed both offensively and defensively, scoring 10 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. Palmer Brown (6'-4" Jr. G/F) and Sean Weston (5'-11" Jr G) each had 7 points. Corey Rainwater (6'-6" Sr F) had 2 points, but did not play much due to an injury. Deron Geter scored 7 points.
For Redondo, Moore had 8 points, and did well in the assist column with about 8 as well. Andrew Zahn had 17 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocked shots, and 4 assists. Levi Staufer (6'-3" Sr, G) had 16 points, keeping Redondo in the game during the second half with deadly accuracy from the 15'-17' range, but missing a bunch of 3's. Titus Hunt (6'-3" Jr G) scored 6 points and Walter White (6'-4" Jr F) had 2 points.
The game had a strange beginning and a very exciting finish. The game opened with double technicals being assessed against the teams, for allegedly "dunking" during the warmups. We are not aware of any CIF rule which prohibits this, but then we also don't know about the rule concerning the jersey having to be tucked in at all times either (c'mon, let's have one of you refs out there show us the rule. . . we dare you.) As a result, both teams made their free throws and the score was 2-2 before the opening tip-off. The game continued close all evening. And with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game, Serra was up by one point, 64-63. Unfortunately for Redondo, Tyler Hoffman's final shot with only seconds remaining hit the rim, and didn't drop. Serra got the ball back and was immediately fouled by Redondo, with about 5 seconds left. Serra made both free throws, Redondo got the ball back into the frontcourt, called time out and set a play for Marcus Moore, whose final shot, like Hoffman's before, went in and out.
Don't miss the games Saturday, they'll be some of the best this year and you won't want to miss the Serra crew going at it with Joe Shipp and the guys from Fairfax.
