Matt Moore:
Times Athlete
of the Week--(December 29, 1997)
Boy a lot of stuff happened while we were gone. Tournaments, games, player profiles, coach talks, lots of stuff to catch up on. One of these little items that we came across was a profile of Matt Moore (6'-7" Sr. F/C) in the Los Angeles Times, which named him the "Athlete of the Week".
Seems that at 240 lbs, Moore has been just tearing it up for the La Canada Spartans. Moore averaged 24 points and 10 rebounds in three games last week, to lead the Spartans into the La Canada tournament final. Moore had 30 points and 12 boards in one of the semifinal games (against Bishop Montgomery, one of the very talented teams from this year's Compton Tip-Off Classic--check our archives for our take on them). In fact, as the Times notes, Bishop Montgomery has nine players listed at 6'-4" or better.
In his first season on varsity as a sophomore, Moore averaged 9.1 points and 4.3 rebounds, and last season, Moore improved that average to 22.1 points per game, and 7.4 rebounds per game. La Canada won their 10th straight Rio Hondo League Championship, and it doesn't look like there are too many who will challenge them this year either.
Moore is a definite D-I prospect, so somebody sign him up. Lavin, you listening? How about you, Ben Braun?
Congratulations to Matt Moore on being named the Times' Athlete of the Week.
