Lompoc
Tournament: St. Joseph Defeats
Dos Pueblos for Title--(December 7,1997)
St. Joseph 61, Dos Pueblos 58: The Dos Pueblos Chargers went cold in the fourth quarter, going scoreless for four minutes while St. Joseph relentlessly hammered away at an 11-point deficit to come from behind to win the Lompoc Tournament. Shan Tay Legans and Dan Hoefer each had 19 points to lead the Chargers, while Alex Jenkins added 15. Jenkins had nine rebounds and Hoefer eight.
But the Chargers, now 2-1, got little contribution from the rest of the squad - only two others scored. Matt Cova led St. Joseph, 3-0, with 18 points. Dos Pueblos had three 3-point attempts to tie at the end of the game but missed. According to Dos Pueblos Coach Phil Sherman, ``The problem we've had is not putting teams away. We're getting big leads but we need that killer instinct."
In the Third Place Game, Lompoc broke a 32-32 halftime tie, going on a 23-2 run in the third quarter to win in overwhelming fashion over Bishop Diego 80-45. Bishop Diego just literally disappeared, scoring only 13 (that's right thirteen! ) points in the entire second half. While Lompoc romped by scoring 48 points. ``We went 0-for-11 in the paint in the third quarter, we had a lot of turnovers and Lompoc played well,'' said Bishop coach John Ward. ``Also, the officials let everyone play physical and that was definitely to Lompoc's advantage."
Joe Lammers led Bishop, 2-2, with 11 points and Christian Rovsek added eight. Matt Primous led Lompoc, which is now 2-1, with 14 points.
