21st Annual Reebok Las Vegas
Prep Classic: More 1st Day Scores
--(December 20, 1997)

Ok, we left off with game 18. Basic v. Rice on day one, Rice just kills Basic, 95-34. Pyree Wilson was the MVP and had 20 points. Kenn Satterfield of Rice also had 19 points. This game was not at all a test of Rice nor anything to judge Rice's abilities by. As you'll see later, a better test for Rice came today (Saturday) in the second round when they battled Long Branch, which defeated Harvard-Westlake in the first round.

Game 19: Pacific 73, Bishop Gorman 76. Mo Terry of Gorman had 24 points and was named the MVP. He played 34 minutes of the game. Darrell Ewell had 20 points for Gorman in the winl. This game was notable though because Chaun Ballard (6'-3" Jr. SG) from Pacific, which is from San Bernardino, CA had 50 points in 33 minutes! He had a total of 12 three pointers (out of 23 attempted threes), and he made 17 field goals for 32 attempted. Of course, Ballard had 0 assists, we guess because a guy who is doing all that scoring just can't get credit for passing himself the ball. He also went 4 for 6 from the line. Others scoring for Pacific in the loss were Cedric Clark with 7, James Burries with 3, Mike Hall with 9, and Chris Smith with 4. Interestingly, the only player on Pacific who recorded an assist was Chris Smith, and he had only 2. We didn't see this game, but it was reported to have been just amazing, sort of like 10 (the number of Gorman players who played) on 1. Perhaps that's why Pacific lost, even with Ballard's spectacular solo performance.

Game 20: Jesuit (Carmichael, CA) beat Green Valley (Henderson NV), 73-55. Mike McBrien was the game MVP with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and no assists. We're sure he did something to impress someone, but since we didn't see the game, we've got to look to the stats for clues, and frankly there's nothing remarkable about his performance on paper. Guess this is one of those "you had to be there" type of MVP awards.

Game 21: South Mountain (Phoenix, AZ), lost to Westchester 63-92. Tony Bland, who played almost flawless basketball in this game, had 18 points and was the game MVP. We'll have a full report on this game, but not now. . .we're just too damned tired to do it.

Game 22: Las Vegas beat Pittsburg (CA) 82-60. This was the last game of the day numerically, even if the Westchester game was really the last played. The numbers used really have no significance expect for purposes of the tournament bracketing, and we'll explain that later too. But not now. For now it's enough to note that Ronnie Jones from Vegas was the MVP ofthe Game with 21 points.

Now I'm going to sleep. See ya.
