Tournament Update: Grant
Beats Thousand Oaks--(December 9,1997)
The Lancers win. The Lancers lose. I'm so confused.
Gilbert Arenas (Jr. 6'-3" PG) and Adir Levy (6-0", Jr. G) weren't confused at all.
Between them they combined for 61 points.
The Grant Lancers of Van Nuys won tonight in the second game of the second night of the 26th Annual Thousand Oaks Rotary Invitational Basketball Tournament, defeating the hometown Thousand Oaks Lancers, by a score of 85-71.
This game was not as close as the score would seem to indicate. At one point in the fourth quarter Grant led by as many as 21 points.
Grant came out swinging and led 34-21 at the end of the 1st quarter. Grant won the second quarter scoring 14-13, and led at the half 48-34. Grant also won the third quarter scoring 18-14, and only gave back 5 in the fourth, with T.O. outshooting the Grant Lancers 23-18.
Arenas had 30 points, and fouled out late in the fourth quarter, including 4 three's. But the big story was Adir Levy who had 31 points, didn't foul out, and more importantly tied a tournament record by shooting seven three-pointers.
About midway through the fourth quarter the game was starting to get out of hand, with Grant leading by 21 points when Thousand Oaks made a very quick 11 points in a row--you know the type of play: shot, foul, rebound, shot, foul, rebound, shot. Boom, boom, boom.
Grant was looking very good, and our Fearless Reporter was also very timely with his report tonight, but because he was so awestruck with the performance of Arenas, who just took over the game, and the performance of Adir Levy's three-point bomb-fest, he had absolutely no idea how any of the other Grant players did. As a result we have absolutely no news on the play or scoring of Michael Yildiz (6'-0" Fr. G), Krishna Evans (6'-4", Fr. Fwd), or LaRon Harris (6'-3" Sr. C). So we'll have to wait for the newspapers in the morning for more info on them, and the rest of the Grant crew. But you can't really fault him for not noticing anyone else. With two players scoring 61 points between them, and the rest of the team only scoring another 7 baskets, it's entirely understandable that everyone else just seemed to fade away. Of course Arenas and Levy didn't do it all by themselves, and Grant played great defense. We'll have the numbers later.
For Thousand Oaks Bas Van Rhee (6'-6" Sr. C/PF) was the high scorer with 28 points and a ton of rebounds. We'll have more on the whole team's performance, by the numbers tomorrow.
The Lancers win. The Lancers win. The Lancers win.
