Montclair Wins Consolation--(December 11,1997)
After losing to South Gate in the El Segundo Tournament this past Monday, Montclair Prep achieved a measure of redemption on Wednesday in a consolation bracket game by beating Leuzinger High 84-81. Rocky Steryo (6'-2" Sr SG) , one of the most under-recruited pure shooters on the west coast, hit 10 out of 19 of his field goal attempts, and made eight three pointers, finishing with 28 points in the game and 8 assists.
The game was almost out of reach for Montclair who trailed by as many as 10 points late in the third before Steryo began the comeback. Jed Hall (6'-71/2" Sr PF/C) had an off game with only 7 points, while Geoff Hull (6'-2" Sr F) had 15, Jules Thompson (6'-3" Sr F) had 12 points, Kevin Bentley (6'-2" Sr SF/PF) had 13, and Carlese Clark (5'-10" Sr. PG) had 7. Micah Cohen (5'-10" Sr PG/SG) had only 2 points but had 6 assists. with 7. Montclair's record on the season was 2-1 with the win.
Montclair does not seem to be playing up to its potential allowing teams which are not nearly as talented to put them in tight positions or losing games that should have been won. But it's very early and we're still betting that Montclair will come together during the regular season and will make a deep run during the playoffs, possibly challenging for a State Division V title.
Montclair moves up in the consolation round, and we'll keep you advised of their progress.
