T.O. Tournament: Dos Pueblos
Beats Newbury Park--(December 9,1997)

Shantay Legans (5'-9" Jr PG) and his Dos Pueblos teammates beat Newbury Park and the Bobik brothers decisively in the third game of the second night of the 26th Annual Thousand Oaks Rotary Invitational Basketball Tournament.

The score: Dos Pueblos 90, Newbury Park 75.

Newbury Park came out looking like the Celtics from the 1960's, apparently thinking that they were so good they could spot their opponent 16 points and still come back. And they didn't seem too worried about it when the score in the first quarter got to 20-4, with Dos Pueblos ahead.

It was so out of control for Newbury Park that Dos Pueblos, which had an amazing lead, put in mostly subs in the first quarter. Actually they had to for Shantay, who had 4 points in the first, but also picked up two quick fouls and sat until about 4 minutes were showing on the clock in the second quarter. Tafari Pipersburg (6'-1" Jr SG) stepped up the scoring for Dos Pueblos, with 14 at the half, which included a couple of very nice three's.

And doing their 1960's Celtics imitation, Newbury Park almost pulled it off, narrowing the gap to 10 points at the half. Dan Bobik (6'-6" Sr PG), who has signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Brigham Young next year, hit a three at the buzzer to bring the score to 44-34. Certainly not insurmountable lead for Dos Pueblos and Newbury was determined to get back into it..

And they did. In the third quarter, Newbury Park got it as close as three points in the third, but then Dos Pueblo, scoring in spurts just pulled away, leading again by 10 points. Nick Czernik hit another 3 at the buzzer in the third to bring the score to 63-55, closing the gap to 8. But in the fourth quarter it's all Dos Pueblos, and Newbury just can't catch them.

And there was a good reason Newbury couldn't catch them. Shantay Legans just took over the game in the fourth, doing his nice left-handed Nick Van Excel look-alike contest, he just passed, shot, drove and handled the ball marvelously. In the 4th he shot 11 points, including 7 consecutive points, three straight field goals, including a three, and finished the night at 23 points. His play was typified by a 2-on-1 break on which he brought the ball upcourt, and from way behind the three point line, managed to find his teammate under the basket, and just threw a chest-pass bullet which hit the receiver just right, and it was converted for two. He was passing with authority, very smoothly all night, but especially in the fourth. He also had a couple of nice fall away jumpers, hit a few threes, and overall played an outstanding game. Alex Jenkins (6'-5" Jr SF/PF) hit 16 points and also played great for Dos Pueblos, with 10 in the first half alone. Pipersberg had 20 for the game.

For Newbury Park, Dan Bobik had 22 points, but this Newbury Park team is clearly a team in need of an identity. And the frustration was beginning to show on Bobik, who at one point was arguing with the ref and pushed another player out of his way. Interestingly, Dan Block didn't play and we certainly don't know why because he is one of the better players on the team. Brian Polen came in and seemed to energize the team when the score was getting out of control to bring Newbury Park bask into it. But frankly we lost track of how many points he had. Brian Bobik also didn't seem right, like he was playing either with a bad back or was sick because he just wasn't hustling, and despite the fact that he was getting killed on the floor by Dos Pueblos, he stayed in the game, which was probably a tactical mistake.

We'll have to wait for the papers in the morning to give you the full scoring details. We'll put them up as soon as they arrive.
