Channel Islands Tourney:
Home Team Advances--(December 11,1997)

As we reported earlier, the Channel Islands Tournament is being played this week at (where else) Channel Islands High School. Not surprisingly, this tournament features teams from the Channel League in the Oxnard, Santa Barbara and Santa Maria/San Luis Obispo area.

On Wednesday, in a pool play game, Channel Islands beat visiting Santa Maria 77-62 in a pool play game. Dwight Sattiewhite scored 29 points and O.J. Thomas had 18 points and nine assists for the Channel Islands Raiders. Channel Islands is now 4-0 on the season. These two guys have had some phenomenal games in two tournaments so far this year and we're predicting that they'll be top prospects by the time this season is over.

Channel Islands played Malibu tonight at 7:30 pm in the second round. We'll have the results of that game tomorrow for you.

On Wednesday, Malibu beat Hueneme 66-65 in a real squeaker, in which Andy Collins scored 27 points for Hueneme, which was beaten in the final seconds by Malibu. Hueneme's record with the loss drops to 1-3. Collins had five 3-pointers in the game, and just shot the lights out. But it wasn't enough and Malibu advanced to play Channel Islands in a second round game.

In other pool play action in the tournament, Oxnard just demolished Pacific Coast Christian 60-29. Thirteen of 14 players scored for Oxnard, which is now 3-2 on the year. Bobby Reyes, Eric Fong and Ricky Hernandez each scored 10 points for Oxnard, and Jacob Rogers was Oxnard's top rebounder with six.

Pacific Coast Christian might want to rethink it's basketball strategy this season. During the first quarter they only scored two points, and Oxnard led 28-12 at the half. Oxnard will play Santa Maria today at 6:00 pm in the second round of the tournament.

We'll try to keep abreast of the tournament and will post up the results as soon as they become available..
