Chaminade
Tournament Update:
Semifinal Games Played Wednesday--(December 18,1997)
After taking a day off on Tuesday, the Chaminade Christmas Classic got going again yesterday, and the results were not really surprising. In the first game in the Championship bracket, El Camino Real was defeated by Rio Mesa, 59-55, and Rio Mesa was led by the fine shooting of Guerrero with 16, Stevens with 11 points, and Romero with 10. El Camino had good performances from Hoke who had 19, Daniels with 13, and Robertson with 12.
In the Fifth Place Semifinal, Campbell Hall became the latest team to just hammer Van Nuys, 52-47, and this game was marred by one of Van Nuys' players getting a technical, then sitting, then going back into the game and getting another T. Standouts for Campbell Hall were former Maccabi Team LA Basketball player Josh Glass who had 15 points, Woodard with 14 points and 10 boards, and Polk with 10. Campbell Hall won the scoring in every quarter except the second in which they were outscored 15-13.
Campbell Hall improved it's record to 7-1, while Van Nuys is winless at 0-7.
In the consolation semifinals, Chaminade's JV's lost by 8, 78-70 to Marshall. Shawn Pillar, who is, interestingly, the tournament's leading scorer, and a member of the Chaminade JV (quick, somebody put him on the varsity squad) had 26 points, while Darren Tarlow, another member of the Team LA Maccabi Basketball Team, had 8 points and 10 rebounds. These guys are two solid preformers for the Chaminade JV's.
Finally, in the headline game, Chaminade beat Malibu handily 54-22. This game was never in doubt and at the end of the first quarter the score was 17-0. In the first half the poor overwhelmed Malibu team only scored seven points! Too bad there's no "mercy rule" in high school hoops, because somebody should have called this game. In the second half, it got a little better, but Malibu only managed 10 points in the third, and 15 in the fourth. This game really was no contest for Chaminade, and to say that Chaminade improved their record to 5-1 with this game is probably not entirely fair. Chaminade played like they were at an entirely different level than Malibu, principally because they are. Chaminade, which has been beaten this season by Simi pretty decisively, may not quite be at the level of the Pioneers, but they are certainly a world apart from the teams playing in their own tournament. Not that Malibu is bad; they're not. It's just that they cannot possibly hope to compete against a team with the size, quickness, speed and shooting ability of Chaminade.
Everybody scored last night. It was a real party. Justin Beach seems to have left the shooting drought behind and hit 11, Scott Long had 8, while Clarence Mitchell had 6, Cayce Cooke had , Scot Borchart had a season low 4 points, Jeff Stine had 6, Justin Stewart 5, Josh Levy had 3, Mike Kokorowski had 2, Ray Rodriguez and Ryan Cichon each had 2 points, while Nick Lawson had 1. Only Robby Tanouye, JJ Todd Chris Canoles and Matt Chirba didn't score.
Chaminade will meet Rio Mesa for the Championship Game, and we predict that Chaminade will win. Big.
