Bolsa Grande Tournament: First Night--(December 3,1997)
Marina 65, Savanna 56:
In a matchup between Sunset League's Marina High, and Savanna, Scott Rivera and Dustin Kaatz each scored 14 points, leading the Marina Vikings to a solid victory over Savanna in pool play at the Bolsa Grande Tournament on Tuesday night at Bolsa Grande. Marina led 32-30 at the half and never trailed. Marina is now 1-1 on the season, and will meet Laguna Beach today in third round action. Savanna, 0-1 on the year, will meet Santa Fe Christian on Thursday. The game featured great defensive play from Bassim Sood, who had 10 boards for Marina. For Marina, Brown had 10, Hung had 6, Rivera 14, Vo had 4, Kaatz 14, Austin 7 and Sood 10. Brown had 2 three pointers; For Savanna, Herrera had 4, Smith 4, King 19, Watanabe 8, Watson 10 Williams 4, Randall 5, and Hutton 2.
Bolsa Grande 88, Santa Ana 56:
Host Bolsa Grande of the Garden Grove League went on a 29-11 scoring run in the second quarter, and never looked back in this rather lopsided victory over the Golden West League's Santa Ana Saints, who are 0-2 this season. Buc Nugyen scored 22 points, a game high. Carrera of Santa Ana had 2 three-pointers while Bolsa Grande had 9 threes in total from Cotto (1), Pham (1), Baughman (1), Ly (2), Nguyen (2), James (1) and Campos (1).
Laguna Beach 70, Santa Fe 65:
In a matchup between Coastal League Santa Fe and Pacific Coast League Laguna Beach, Jamison of Laguna scored 24, including 4 three-pointers, while Nick Reynolds (6'-7" Sr. C) poured in 11, and Chris Siriani (6'-3" Sr. G) had 15 points. Kurt Beinfohr (6'-4" Sr. F) also had 14 points. Laguna trailed 14-16 at the end of the first quarter, but pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring Santa Fe 26-11. For Santa Fe, Adams had 12, consisting of 4 three-pointers, Bonwell had 15, Gregory 2, Vescera 9, Jake Washington 11 and John Washington 16. Santa Fe is now 1-1 and Marina is 1-0.
