Birmingham defeated Buena yesterday in the second day of play at the Beverly Hills Tournament at Beverly Hills by a score of 51-49.

Buena was in a position to tie the game with 18 seconds showing on the clock, but turned the ball over. Birmingham jumped out to an early 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Buena came back with a 15-6 scoring run in the second quarter, and led at the half 25-20. Birmingham trailed, 38-31, after three quarters, but went on a 14-6 run to start the fourth quarter; for the quarter Birmingham outscored Buena 20-11 to get the victory. Fletcher had a dunk with 3:46 showing in the fourth which ended the 14-6 run, but which gave Birmingham its first lead in the quarter at 45-44. Ryan Fay of Buena made five of eight three-pointers through three quarters, including four of seven as the Buena built the 25-20 halftime lead. But he made only one of four in the fourth quarter and had he been able to get off the last shot, could have sent the game into overtime. Fay finishing with 25 points and seven rebounds. Looks like Buena could have used Ian Boys in this game. Somebody call Dean Bradshaw.

For Birmingham, Jerome Riley had 14 points and eight rebounds, while Kopulsky had 2, Hassankhail had 6 points and 8 assists, Fletcher 15, Evans 12, and Foster 2. Buena's scoring was led by Fay, with 25, Brown with 12, Probasco 2, Conaway 2, Wilde 3, and Thompson 4.

Birmingham will play Cleveland today at 3:30 in Second round action at Beverly Hills, while Buena drops into the consolation bracket and will play Culver City at 3:30 on Thursday.
