Bell-Jeff
Tournament Update:
Wednesday's Games--(December 18,1997)
Actually, we're going to start calling this one the "stealth" tournament. It's almost as if Bell-Jeff is trying to keep this one a secret. Repeated calls to the athletic office yielded nothing. A review of the local papers made it look like it was a virtual news blackout. The usually reliable Pasadena Star-News didn't have anything on this one. The LA Times had no articles, no box scores, only a single line score for each game played on Wednesday. And the Daily News, surprisingly, which calls itself the Valley's newspaper, had no story, and only one box score, and that was for the Bell-Jeff vs. Eagle Rock contest, played Tuesday, which we already reported on yesterday (before the Daily News box score even appeared). Eli Essa needs a new press agent. Actually he doesn't need a "new" one, he just needs one, period. Maybe it's just Kent Dennis sucking up all the publicity in the room, creating a huge vacuum where Ruben Douglas and Mike West once appeared in the papers.
So, until probably tomorrow (unless we hear from one of our other usually reliable sources who may have attended the games on Wednesday) we'll have to wait for tomorrow (Friday) in order to find out what happened two days ago.
Word is that the Varsity portion of the Bell-Jeff Tournament got back underway on Wednesday, after taking the day off to let the JV portion of the tourney have the court. Here are some of the results from the games played on Wednesday:
Sylmar 76, St. John Bosco 63.
We actually got something about this game from the Long Beach Press Telegram, and we presume they had some info to satisfy the St. John Bosco fans. Here's the scoop: Forward Greg King-Hill had 18 points for Brian Breslin's St. John Bosco Braves, whose record fell to 3-4 as Sylmar won. King Hill also had 11 rebounds in the game.
Other games included (at least according to the LA Times):
Grant 82, Luezinger 80
North Hollywood 75, Kennedy 54.
**************
The games which were scheduled for today looked like they were supposed to be semifinal games:
Eagle Rock v. Monroe-- 3:30 pm
Burroughs v. Sylmar-- 5:00 pm
Arroyo v. Bell-Jeff-- 6:30 pm
If we can ever get any news on these games, we'll put up the reports and results. We're keeping our fingers crossed on these.
