Arroyo Tournament Update:
Bell-Jeff & San Gabriel Advance
--(December 13,1997)

The Championship bracket played a few games on Thursday, December 11, in the 40th Annual Arroyo Basketball Tournament. Matching up were Bell-Jeff against Monrovia in the semifinals for the Championship game, Los Altos against Arcadia in the Fifth-Place semifinal, and San Gabriel against Alta Loma in the Consolation semifinals.

We didn't get to see these games, but received some reports:

Bell-Jeff defeated Monrovia 72-58, in what was pretty much a runaway two-car freight train named Douglas-West. In fact, only four players for Bell-Jeff scored in the whole game. Ruben Douglas scored 30 points, Mike West scored 26, Pat Thornell had 14 and Chris Jones had 4. Not exactly what we'd call balanced scoring, but then it got the job done.

Monrovia was a bit more balanced, but got over half it's production from one player: 31 of its 58 points came from Shawn Fredericks. Mike Boykins had 8, Steve For had 5, Gary Sechi 4, Chad Camine 5, and Mike Canizales 5.

Douglas actually had a season low in scoring, but of course the season is young, and Bell-Jeff has only played 3 games, and they've won all so far. Douglas also had five assists and 13 rebounds.

In the fifth place semis, Los Altos beat Arcadia 60-46. Arcadia was a bit down, coming off the loss to Bell-Jeff on Thursday, and Los Altos' pressure d was just too tough for Arcadia. Los Altos forced 25 turnovers from Arcadia, and the scoring never really took off for the Apaches. Dionse Cox (5'-11 Jr. PG), normally a double digit scorer, only had 8 points, while Shawn Fang (6'-4" Sr. C/F), Oliver Chi (6'-3" Sr. F), and Jorge Corbera (5'-6" Sr. PG) each only had 4 points. Art Chin (6'-0" Sr. SG/F) was the lone bright spot in point production for Arcadia, with 15. Others scoring were Derek Epps (6'-2" Jr. G/F) with 3, Dennis Wang (6'-0" Sr. G/F) with 6, and Alan Wong (6'-0" Sr. F/G) had 2.

For Arcadia, Bobby Gonzales had 6, Lex Brown had 12, Tyler Okamoto topped all scoring with 18, Jerod Leyva had 11, Ahmed Elbali had 2 points, Justin Van Duyue had 2 and Josh Barrera had 5 while Joel Gonzales finished with 4.

After one quarter, the score was almost dead even with Los Altos ahead by 1 point, 11-12. At the half Los Altos had stretched the lead to 8 points at 30-22. The third quarter was played to a dead heat on 14-14 scoring, but at the end of the quarter Los Al still led by 8, at 44-36. The final quarter was all Los Altos, and they outscored Arcadia 16-10 to win by 14.

In the Consolation Semifinals, San Gabriel beat Alta Loma 54-36. San Gabriel survived a very slow start, but still managed to outscore Alta Loma in the first half 30-25. San Gabriel scoring was led by Trevor Martin (5-8" Jr. G), and was followed by Tan Duong (5'-8" So. G) who had 9, David Gonzalez (5'-11" Sr. F)--there it is again, a 5'-11" forward in division IA ball, and he only weighs 150 lbs! This is a tournament of relatively smaller players than say, the Thousand Oaks tourney, or the Tournament of Champions. San Gabriel's other scorers were Eric Miranda (6'-0" Sr. F) with 4, Luis Mendoza (6'-2" Sr. G) with 12, Jude Oliva (5'-9" Sr. G)--who is listed in the program for the tourney as "Jude Mendoza" not Oliva. . .we really don't know which is correct--with 7 points, and Steve Underhill (5'-8" Sr. G) with 2.

For Alta Loma this was a pretty tough loss, especially since they are one team with a true "big" man in Adam Parada (6'-9" Jr. C)--he only scored 8. Others scoring were Adonis Witt (5'-10" Sr. G), Brad Spetnagle (5'-11 Sr. G) with 7, Jay Gore with 2, Niko Lattinen with 2, Justin Carter also with 2, Greg Wilson with 5, and Adrian Lujan (6'-0" Sr. F) with 4.
