More Arroyo First Night News From Pasadena--(December 9,1997)
Well we dug a little deeper and we've got some additional information on the Arroyo Tournament. Like for instance, what happened in the Los Altos v. Gabrielino game on Monday night, which Los Altos won 59-50. Here's the report:
This game was won and lost at the free throw line, according to the Pasadena Star News. Actually, it was won and lost all over the court. Gabrielino just missed a whole lot more shots than Los Altos did.
The preseason poop on Gabrielino didn't look very good to begin with. They were winless last season, going 0-22. Their coach, Scott Brummett told reporters a few weeks ago, "I think we'll be able to compete with anyone in the league this season. This group has been together for three years and they know each other and they know the program."
Hey coach, time to get another program.
Actually prior to this game, Gabrielino had already broken the winless streak and they were 2-0 on the season.
With the loss they are now 2-1 and in the last two years Gabrielino is now 2-23. It's getting better all the time.
Actually we don't want to be unfair, because Gabrielino is going to win a few more games this season. Don't look for them to finish extremely high up in the Mission Valley League, where they'll be competing against Arroyo, Cerritos, El Monte, Mountain View, Rosemead and South El Monte. But it's already better than before, and they've still got a winning record.
Gabrielino does return
Anthony Ruiz, an all-league guard last season (kind of amazing
that they'd have one on a team that went 0-22, but that's what
all the preseason profiles say), and Nic Larsen, Daniel Perry,
Sean Maxey, Jonathon Clark and Jason Coble. Other players this
year are Carlos Mora, Mihn Lac, Robert Cassidy and Johnny Castro.
We don't have height or class listings to post on these guys, but
will fill in during the season.
For it's part, Los Altos plays in the Miramonte League, with schools mostly from the Pomona Valley-Diamond Bar area, such as Charter Oak, Garey, Pomona, Walnut and Wilson/Hacienda Heights. We don't really have any info on them, except that they beat Gabrielino, and that they've got a pointguard Tyler Okamoto who went 8 for 8 from the line last night and finished with 14 points.
The game was fairly close throughout, and with five minutes remaining Los Altos' center Joel Gonzalez fouled out, and Gabrielino, which was down by 11 at the time, started a scoring run led by junior forwards Daniel Perry and Robert Cassidy. In the next minute or so, Gabrielino scored 7 while LA scored 2, and Gabrielino only trailed by 6 with about 3:30 to go. After a time-out by LA, Okamoto led an 11-4 run by LA, and Los Altos was back on top at the end of the fourth quarter by 9, to win 59-50.
Los Altos ran a terrific fast-break offense and quickly established both the running game and the perimeter shooting on guards Bobby Godinez who finished with 14 and Justin Van Duyne, who had nine.
For Gabrielino, juniors Robert Cassidy led the team in scoring with 14 and Sean Maxey had 9. Gabrielino is 2-1
