USC Loses to UNLV--(December 2,1997)

It's not getting much better for the Trojans. They lost last night 82-72 in a game they could have won if they'd been healthy. USC is now 4-2, and UNLV, which won is now 3-1 in non-conference play.

The injuries keep piling up:
Jarvis Turner, out with a broken hand.
Jeff Trepagnier is dizzy from a virus.
Anthony White has a broken foot.
Gary Williams gets hit in the mouth and leaves the game.

And so, USC loses. Not by a lot, and they could have won. But they didn't.

Turner, second leading scorer for SC, broke his hand early in the first half on a freak play. Battling for an offensive rebound, he hit a UNLV player on the shoulder. Turner watched the second half from the bench with cast on his hand. s Turner, a USC 6'-8" power forward, is out for at least a month, and played only 8 minutes last night. Gary Williams, 6'-7", another USC forward, was pretty much no good after getting hit in the mouth on a play. He did manage to score 12 points though in just 18 minutes, and had he not been injured that might have made the difference, since at one point in the game with only 6:46 left to play, the Trojans were leading by one, 66-65.

SC did have some good play from senior guard Gary Johnson, who scored a career-high 18 points; Shannon Swillis, a 6'-6" forward also had 15 boards and 3 blocked shots. In fact it was Swillis who hit the j that gave the Trojans that one point lead.

But the real hero (if there was one in all the mess) for the Trojans was freshman Jeff Trepagnier from Compton, who just lit it up during the half, and in three minutes he had a huge slam-dunk, blocked two shots, and hit for three from way outside. Trepagnier hit for a total of 11 points, but later fouled out . Trepagnier also limited UNLV's usually high scoring Tyrone Nesby to only 14 points, the first time he's scored less than 20 in four games this season.

UNLV's Greedy Daniels (I swear to god, that's his name) led UNLV's scoring, hitting for 17 points, 9 boards, 6 assists and 5 steals.

USC next plays at Ohio State on December 20, so they'll have a chance to regroup before going out to Buckeye land.
