Lompoc Tourney: Shantay
Legans Hits for 21 --(December 5,1997)

Shantay Legans scored 21 points and had nine steals and nine assists as Dos Pueblos opened its season with a 77-64 non-league win over Cabrillo at the Lompoc Tournament yesterday, December 4. Ryan Holbrook added 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Dan Hoefer had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Jay Richardson led Cabrillo with 23 points.

Dos Pueblos will play tonight in the semifinals at 6 p.m. tonight against Bishop Diego at Lompoc.

``We can play a lot better,'' said Dos Pueblos coach Phil Sherman. ``We were playing in spurts. It was frustrating." Of Richardson, Sherman said, ``He's a Division I-type guy.''

Since we at SoCalHoops were at the Wooden High School Invitational, we obviously couldn't be up in Lompoc too, but we're sure we'll be hearing more from ShanTay about the game later. Check our Prep Message Board for an update from him, since he frequently posts there.

The scoring totals were as follows:

CABRILLO: Jay Richardson 23, James 11, Leninger 2, Jam. Richardson 4,
Davis 13, Savalla 4, Jenkins 5.

Fouled out: No one.
Technicals: Dos Pueblos-Jenkins.

Dos Pueblos will also be playing next week at the Thousand Oaks Rotary Tournament at Thousand Oaks High, Tuesday December 9, at 7:30 pm against Newbury Park.

Way to go Shantay.

In the other game at Lompoc which we know about, Bishop Diego (Tri-Valley League) beat Arroyo Grande (Northern League) 60- 52. Arroyo Grande's got this really big freshman, Phillip Johnson, 6'-10", who was pretty impressive defensively, but who didn't apparently score, at least it doesn't appear that he did from the info we were sent. But at 6'-10" we bet Bishop Diego could hear him running up and down the floor. Bishop Diego has a hot-shooter in Joe Lammers, who reeled off 10 points in the first quarter and nine in the fourth, and who had a total of 21 ponts. Bishop Diego was also playing without one of their starting guards for most of the game after Tony Ortiz went down with a sprained ankle. But Mike Burich and Marcus Madrigal picked up the slack, helping Bishop Diego to the win.

Here's the scoring, if you're interested.

Bishop Diego: Madrigal 5, Perlis 0, Ortiz 7, Burich 4, Lammers 21, Sanchez 0, Stupar 0, Adcock 8, Rovsek 15. Totals 22 13-24 60.

Arroyo Grande: Gonzalez 2, Younger 6, Harrison 3, Landers 11, Wickher 12, Leon 2, Johnson 12, Linneman 4. Totals 20 3-5 52.

3-point goals-BD 3 (Lammers 2, Ortiz 1), AG 8 (Landers 3, Younger 2, Wickher 2, Harrison 1). Total fouls-BD 10, AG 21. Fouled out: AG: Harrison.
