Irvine
World News Tournament
Next Week--(December 12,1997)
While most of the top teams in the country, or at least those who everyone thought were good last year and who still might be good will be traveling to Las Vegas to play in the Reebok Holiday Prep Classic, including some of the top teams in SoCal, there will be a ton of teams not going to Vegas.
So what are all those teams supposed to be doing during the holiday break? The simple answer is that they will be playing basketball, basketball, and a little more basketball at some great local SoCal tourneys. And top among the tournaments being held next week is the 16-team Irvine World News Tournament.
We don't have the brackets or even the locations for this one, but we do know that it will feature a team ranked by the Los Angeles Times as seventh in its pre-season Orange County poll, University (no not the one from San Diego, which is technically known as "University of San Diego High School", and which features the Walton brothers and cousins and David Abramowitz--no, that one will be in Vegas). University is one of the 10 Orange County teams involved. Play begins Tuesday, and will also see eighth-ranked Dana Hills in the same half of the bracket (which we don't have--see we're relying on terrible reporting from the newspapers) as University and the two could meet in the semifinals, Dec. 19.
Once we get more info on this one we'll let everyone know about it.
