Rim Rattler Fall Showcase: High
School
Top 24 Soph Game--(Sept. 27, 1998)
The rosters got slightly revised, and the crowds weren't all that thick at the first game of the day, but as things turned out, it was probably one of the best games of the day, and there were still plenty of college coaches in attendance. Here's the bottom line: The "Gray" team won, 111-92. But the score was really not important
The "Black" team consisted of:
Brian Baker (5'-11" So. PG) from Mater Dei-- a very quick player, fine shooter, with a deadly crossover, he scored 12 points, including 2 three's.
Shaun Michel (6'-3" So. SG) from Simi Valley--normally a fine perimeter shooter, but had some difficulty hitting, played the point a bit, and had some success driving. Still a big talent, he scored 6 points.
Derrick Craven (6'-2" So. PG/SG) from Bishop Montgomery--the point guard in the family, played a great game, continues to impress, he scored 16 points.
Errick Craven (6'-2" So. PG/SG) from Bishop Montgomery--feeds the point with some great alley-oop passes, and when he's not doing that, he's going to the rack on his own, he scored 19 points.
Ricky Porter (6'-3" So. SG) from Mater Dei--a fine player, good defender, he scored 8.
Matt McGinnis (6'-3" So. SG/SF) from Villa Park--mostly played the two spot, a strong player, runs the floor with ease, has a good touch, he scored 5 points.
Chris Alexander (6'-3" So. SG/SF) from Price High School--too bad this isn't called a "Discovery Shootout", because Chris was both a discovery and he shot the lights out, hitting for 19 points. Where the heck is Price anyway?
Dillon Hayes (6'-6" So. F) from Tustin High-- a slashing, athletic forward who rebounded well, he scored 9 points
Phillip Johnson (6'-11" So. F/C) from Arroyo Grande High (near SLO)-- A big, strong kid, who is obviously still growing, played well, scoring 8 points, but needs to develop some strength and become more active. A top prospect in the making.
Kyle Egan (6'-6" So. F) from Villa Park-- good player, runs the floor, and defense is obviously his forte', because he didn't get a lot of touches when he was in. Scored 4 points.
The "Gray" team consisted of:
Keilon Fortune (5'-10" So. PG) from Dominguez-- played just a phenomenal game. Only scored 4 points, but must have had at least 20 assists, including repeatedly setting up his buddy Tyson with some unbelievable slams. One of the best point guards anywhere in any class this year.
Dijon Thompson (6'-3" So. SG/SF) from Redondo Union--very athletic, skilled player, awesome defender, and can hit from just about anywhere with great consistency. Scored 15 points.
Cody Pearson (6'-3" So. SG/PG) from Sherman Oaks Notre Dame-- Cody probably missed more shots and slam dunks than anyone else on the floor, and while his percentage wasn't very good, he still managed to hit for 19 points. Had some great turnaround finger-rolls, and managed to squeeze through spaces that didn't look like they were there. Very athletic, could be the next Gilbert Arenas.
Marcus Crane (6'-3" So. SG) from Artesia High-- normally a very strong, smooth player, he somehow managed to literally disappear here, and limited most of his game to defense, scoring 4 points.
Patrick Leffler (6'-4" So. SG) from Esperanza High in Anaheim--Patrick is an unually unassuming looking player, but he can jack it up or take it to the hole with the best of them, and he played much better on Saturday than he did when we saw him playing for the "And 1" team in the Fall Hoops Classic. He scored 14 points in a variety of ways, and looked pretty good.
Josh Childress (6'-5" So. SG/SF)--from Mayfair High--Put another 20 pounds on this guy and he'll be truly scary. Josh is very thin, almost wiry, but he can get up, has some serious hops, and jams, runs the floor, and best of all he plays pretty good defense too, and blocked a couple of shots, and managed to scored 22 points in the process.
Jamaal Williams (6'-6" So. F) from Corona Centennial-- a big, strong player, who is going to get bigger and stronger, he scored 13 points on some great slam dunks, nice layups and rebounded very well.
Eddie Draughn (6'-5" So. F) from Mayfair High-- rail thin, agile, runs the floor well, rebounds, and can shoot from the perimeter or drive to the hole. Had two of the most memorable slam dunks of the game and played very unselfishly, distributing the ball and passing more like a point guard than a forward. Scored 10 points.
Tyson Chandler (7'-0" So. F) from Dominguez-- As the announcer says, he's "the Franchise." Scored in as many ways as there are ways to score, he had 25 points, including one of the most beautiful slam dunks off a feed from Keilon that we've ever seen, he was towering above the rim, with his shoulders literally above the square on the backboard. Tyson may not have physically filled out much from last year, but his confidence is way up, and he's finally beginning to believe his press-clippings.
This was a great game, tons of fun, and best of all the players were all having fun too. A great idea to add an underclassman game, and next year we'd like to see Dinos add one for the freshmen too.
