1st Annual
Rim Rattler All-West Camp
Fall Showcase This Weekend--(Sept. 23, 1998)
Dinos sent us the announcement for the 1st Annual Rim Rattler Fall Showcase which will be held at Long Beach City College on Saturday, September 26, 1998. The official announcement actually says "Rim Rattler--maker of fine basketball wear and gear--is the title sponsor for this event. This event is invitation-only is NCAA sanctioned and will showcase the top prep talent in the [sic] Southern California and beyond and promises to attract college coaches and scouts from throughout the country." We always wanted to see top prep talent from the great beyond. :-0).
The Showcase is set to start at 1:00 p.m. with the "Top 24" high school Sophomores Game. That will be followed by a "Top 24 Juniors" game at 3:00 p.m., a "Top 48 H.S. Seniors" (honest, it really says, the top 48 seniors, and all at one time!), at 5:00 p.m. followed by another "Top 24 High School Senior" game at 7:00 p.m.. Lastly, there will be a "Top 24 Junior College" game at 9:00 p.m.
We're guessing that those "top 24" high school seniors will be really tired, considering that it looks like they'll be playing in a lot of games, unless of course what this really means is that there are 96 high school seniors in total, and they'll be divided up so that they play in the three games, and maybe none of them will play more than once. Still, we haven't quite figured out how Dinos expects to get "48 seniors" into a single game at 3:00 p.m., since by anyone's roster standards that's a lot of players to try to squeeze into a single game. But Dinos is ever the masterful host, and we're sure he'll figure out a way to do it by Saturday.
The official announcement tells us that there are many high school seniors who have already confirmed their attendance, including such notables as Gilbert Arenas (6'-3" Sr. SG) from Grant HS, Julius Barnes (6'-1" Sr. SG/PG) from Rowland Heights, Chris Clark (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF) from Glendora, Jerry Dupree (6'-7" Sr. F) from Moreno Valley HS, Casey Jacobsen (6'-6" Sr. SG) from Glendora, Dalron Johnson (6'-8" Sr. F/C) from Verbum Dei, Eric Knight (6'-1" Sr. SG) from Westchester HS, Keith Kincaide (6'-4" Sr. SG/SF) from Compton Dominguez, Donnell Knight (6'-7" Sr SF) from Phoenix St. Mary's, Shantay Legans (5'-10" Sr. PG) from Goleta Dos Pueblos, Tito Maddox (6'-4" Sr. PG) from Compton High, Marcus Moore (6'-4" Sr. SG) from Redondo Union High, Chris Osborne (6'-10" Sr. F/C) from Westchester, John Oden (6'-8" Sr PF) from Phoenix Arizona Hayden HS, Marquis Poole (6'-2" Sr. SG) from Compton Centennial, Joe Shipp (6'-5" Sr.SF) from Fairfax, Nick Vander Laan (6'-10" Sr. F/C) from St. Thomas More Prep, Brian Wethers (6'-4" Sr. SG) from Murietta Valley.
Among the juniors who have confirmed their attendance are Nick Booker (6'-5" Jr. SG) from The Bishop's School in La Jolla, Travon Bryant (6'-8" Jr. F/C) from Long Beach Jordan, Patrick Dennihy (6'-9" Jr. F/C) from San Jose Wilcox HS, E.J. Harris (6'-2" Jr. PG) from Crenshaw, Brett Michel (6'-6" Jr. SG/SF) from Simi Valley HS, Ellis Myles (6'-7" Jr. F) from Compton, Wesley Stokes (5'-8" Jr. PG) from Long Beach Poly, Cedric Thompkins (6'-6" Jr. SF) from Compton Dominguez HS, Kam Walton (6'-8" Jr. F/C) from University of San Diego High School, Walter White (6'-5" Jr. PF) from Redondo Union, and Andrew Zahn (6'-9" Jr. PF/C) from Redondo Union.
Dinos promises that a full roster of all the players attending will be made available soon, and the list he's already gotten is pretty impressive. Admission is $5 bucks for adults, and $4 bucks for students. Kids under 12 get in free. Admission is good for all five games, and re-entry is permitted in case you need to leave to get some real food. If you can handle the nachos and hot dogs, they're not half bad, and there will be all the Red Vines and TootsiePops you can handle. If you're looking for Gatorade though, you might want to avoid the charge of $3 bucks for a bottle that costs 79 cents at your local liquor store, so bring your own.
If you need more information, we've been advised that you can feel free to contact the event organizers, Dinos Trigonis at (310) 669-2307 or Etop Udo-Ema at (562) 901-8592.
See you there.
