Double Pump High School Boys & JC Men's
Pump Discovery Shootout This Weekend--(Sept. 15, 1998)

This weekend the Pump Brothers are at it again at Cal State Dominguez Hills where they will host on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday September 20 the Double Pump High School & JC Men's Pump Discovery Shootout. This is a college exposure event, and because so much interest has been generated on this topic in our message board, we also feel compelled to say that it is one of about 300 or so NCAA certified events taking place nationwide during the fall evaluation period which runs from September 8 through 26 (the full list of certified events for the fall of 1998 in men's basketball is located at the NCAA's site at this link).

We've spoken with the Pump staff, namely Jan and Phil Bryant, and they tell us tthat there will be 29 High School traveling teams, 5 teams made up of high school players who register independently (that's right, you don't have to be with a team--you can register for only $110 per individual player or $500 per team) and you will be placed on a team and guaranteed to play in four games.

The teams coming so far that we know about are:

Anaheim Hills--this is a team from Canyon Anaheim, and so we would expect it to be a bunch of the guys who will play there this year for Rob Alexander. Will probably feature Ryan Romberg (6'-7" Sr. F) from Canyon, at least when he's not also playing for North Riverside, Roger Hogan (6'-0" Jr. PG) from Canyon, Neil Hammad (6'-3" Sr. G) from Canyon, and the rest of the Canyon squad. Note that this team will not include the same guys from the "Canyon" team which played during the Best of Summer--Mike Strawberry (6'-4" Fr. G) is already enrolled at Mater Dei; Jamal Walls (6'-7" Fr. F) and DeAngelo Collins (6'-9" Fr. C) both enrolled at Tustin instead, and are playing with SCA based teams; and Darius Sanders (6'-4" Fr. G/F) didn't enroll at Canyon--he also didn't enroll at Serra, Compton, Crenshaw or Mater Dei--instead he's now at Compton Dominguez. When we asked him when he made his decision to enroll there he said "When my dad told me to. . ." Oh.

Arizona Rage--we have no idea who's on this team, but it is coached by Chuck Coburn

Brea Wildcats--Coached by Terry Dodd, so look for a bunch of the Brea Olinda/BWBA guys on this one, including Kyle Dodd (6'-0" Sr. PG) from Brea Olinda, and we would guess Jerret Skrifvars (6'-4" Sr. SG/SF) as well.

Campbell Hall--we would guess that you'll see some of the new transfers brought in by coach Brian Haloosim over the summer, who we hear are quite good, and some of the returning guys, like Greg Drobnick (5-10" Jr. G) and Brandon Woodard (6'-3" Sr. F).

Camp Exposure--Coached by Ace Daniel, we'd expect this to be the same group of guys from the dada Fall Hoops Classic this past weekend, and they feature all-tournament selection Chad Gordon (6'-3" Sr. G) from Crossroads, Virgil Kennerly (6'-6" Sr. F) from LA Jordan, Nehemiah Campbell (6'-4" Sr. G) from LA Washington, Tyrone Riley (6'-6" Jr. F) from LA Jordan, Gerrod Jenkins (6'-6" Sr. F) from Inglewood, Eugene Moore (6'-7" Jr. F) from LA Washington, Sebastian Zielonka (6'-2" So. G) from Anaheim Servite, Allen Purnell (6'-3" Jr. G) from Anaheim Savanna, Ryan Sims (6'-8" Sr. F/C) from Crenshaw, Shaun Hemsley (6'-9" Sr. C) from Crenshaw, J. T. Leitch (5'-10" Jr. PG) from El Segundo, Marquis Poole (6'-2" Sr. G) from Compton Centennial (when he's not also playing for BWBA I), and Jesse Boyd (6'-9" Sr. F/C) from Mira Costa High in Mannhattan Beach.

CA/NY Rhinos--coached by Scott Alvarez. We don't know if they'll look like they did at the Best of the Summer tourney, but if they do, they'll feature a bunch of guys from NorCal, and we'd expect to see Anthony Jones (6'-5" Sr. G) from Cardinal Newman, Robert Johnson (6'-8" Sr. F/C), Jay Marshall (6'-8" Sr. F), Philip Ching (6'-2" Sr. G) from Cardinal Newman, Treut Sperry (5'-10" Sr. PG) from Piner, Blake Smith (6'-6" Sr. F) from Novato, and Lee Jones (6'-6" Sr. F) from Albany. We're sure there will be others, we just don't know at this time.

Central Valley Tar Heels--Coached by Ray Harris, we don't have the roster, but look for the same team which played this last weekend at the EBO Sweet 16 Classic in Fresno.

Friends of Hoop--Coached by Albert Hall, look for this to be a conglomeration of several of the FOH teams which appeared this summer at the adidas/Pump Best of Summer tourney (there were four different FOH teams). If we had to guess, we'd say that you'll see guys like Jamal Crawford (6'-5" Sr. G) from Rainier Beach, Jay Sherrell (6'-8" Sr. F/C) from Bethel, Brian Whitehad (6'-7" Sr. F) from Mt. Vernon, Wesley Nurse (5'-11" Sr. PG) from Decatur, and maybe even Ryan Wildenborg (6'-11" Sr. C) from Juanita, and probably some guys from FOH II or III such as Nate Burleson (6'-2" Sr. G) from O'Dea, and maybe even Jimmy Haywood (6'-3" Sr. G) from Franklin (but only if he has no home visits and isn't home studying for the SAT he'll have to take on October 10). The list of FOH guys from the summer is more than 40 names long, so we'll try to get the official roster before guessing any further.

FSE #1, #2, #3--We have no idea who these teams are, but they are all officially listed as having Harry Wilson as the coach. Maybe we're just ignorant, but we don't have a clue who they are. We do know there will be at least 30 of these guys running around, so they'll be easy to spot :-). Again, we'll have the rosters in the next day or two.

Galena Five Star-- coached by Tom Maurer of Galena High School, look for everybody's favorite point guard, Lance Buoncristiani (5'-8" Sr. PG) from Galena, one of the hardest working, toughest and apparently the most under-recruited player in Nevada. We'd also expect to see guys like Sam Sikes (6'-4" So. G), Mike Holmes (6'-1" Fr. G), Jess Garcia (6'-1" Jr. G), Kody Krug (5'-8" Sr. PG), Mike Atkinson (6'-3" Jr. G), Ryan Alvey (6'-4" Jr. G/F), Chris Weathers (6'-0" Jr. G) and Mike Gargner (5'-11" Jr. G) as well, although they could throw in some other guys. A quick, talented team.

Las Vegas Stars-- we have no idea who these guys will be. They're coached by Al LaRoque, and it will probably have most of the same cast from the Big Time tournament.

NC Gridley Dogs-- coached by Bob Brown, look for a lot of the same guys, minus last year's seniors, and with the addition of a couple of new guys, from the team which played in the Spring Discovery Shootout.

North Riverside--Coaced by Alvin Hunter, look for the same team that played last weekend in the dada Long Beach Fall Hoops Classic: Jerome Beasley (6'-9" Sr. C) from Moreno Valley, Sidney Hampton (6'-3" Jr. G) from Valley View in Moreno Valley, Marc Peters (5'-9" Sr. G) from Rancho Verde), J.S. Nash (6'-0" So. G) from Rancho Verde, Donnie Johnson (5'-9" Jr. PG) from Riverside Poly, Keare Mims (6'-5" Jr. F) from Norte Vista, George Trapp (6'-4" Sr. G) from Moreno Valley, Preston Norman (6'-5" Sr. F) from Rancho Verde, Raji Burnett (5'-9" Jr. PG) from J.W. North, Ryan Romberg (6'-7" Sr.F) from Anaheim Canyon, Lionel Dixon (6'-4" Jr. G) from J.W. North, and Jerry Dupree (6'-7" Sr. F) from Valley View who was selected last weekend to the All-Tournament dada Fall Hoops Classic Team.

North San Diego-- a team which will be coached by John O'Neal, we have no idea who's on it. We could guess, but we'd probably be wrong.

Oxnard/Ventura Heat-- again, we have no real idea. Coached by Doug Collins.

Pump & Run I, II, & III-- Coached by Phil Bryant (we think) and some other guys, look for these teams to have some big time guys and some new players too, including such as Venice players Glen McGowan (6'-7" Sr SG), Kevin Johnson (6'-4" Sr SF), Kyle Morrison (6'-1" Jr SG), David Gale (5'-10" Fr. PG) from Buckley, and we hear that some of the new transfers to Venice will also be along as we reported last week, including David Vance (6'-8" Sr F/C) a transfer from Crenshaw, Joseph Dural (6'-8" Sr. C) who transferred from Verdugo Hills, Montel Duhon (6'-4" Sr SF) a transfer from Manual Arts, Eric Dilworth (5'-9" Sr PG) a transfer from Hamilton, and Matt Hendrix (5'-10" Sr PG) who transferred from Crenshaw. The Pump teams also usually feature some guys who will be featured on more than one team, and in the Spring Shootout several players from TPI and Rockfish also appeared on the P-N-R teams. Again, these teams will feature more than 30 players, so until we get the rosters, it's anyone's guess.

Reno-- coached by Pete Padgett, we'd expect that this would be the other half of the town that isn't already coming with Galena. We'd expect some of the guys who showed up with the Northern NV All Stars last summer, such as Zee Bogales (5'-10" Sr. G) from Reed, London Wilson (5'-11" Sr. PG) from Sparks, Oscar Delgado (6'-4" Sr. G/F) from Sparks, Jeremiah Gray (6'-6" Sr. F) from Reed, Jim Coyne (6'-4" Sr. G) from Douglas, Matt Ochs (6'-8" Sr. F/C) from Reed, and Mike Atkinson (6'-4" Jr. G/F) from Galena, that is when he and Lance Buoncristiani aren't also playing for Galena.

Salpointe HS-- coached by Brian Peabody, look for most of the same guys who appeared during the Best of Summer, including Dominic Mascia (6'-4" Sr. G/F), Jerry Heurstel (6'-4" Sr. G/F), Justin DeBerry (6'-3" Sr. G), John Glaser (5'-10" Jr. PG), Sterling Struckmeyer (6'-1" Sr. G), Tyler Davis (6'-6" Jr. F), Jason Dickens (6'-8" Sr. F/C), Alex Koury (6'-0" Sr. G), Jemel McClandon (6'-6" So. F), and Eric Crum (6'-4" Sr. G/F). We wouldn't expect many changes unless someone is involved in football.

Salt Lake Metro-- David Hammer's team, we also look forward to seeing some of the guys from the Best of Summer again.

Skywalkers-- coached by David Nurse (apparently no relation to Wesley Nurse of FOH), this team was also in the Best of Summer tourney, and at that time it featured Kevin Johnson (5'-7" G) from Quartz Hill, Matthew Nurse (5'-11" Jr. PG) from Antelope Valley, Jamal Culver (6'-2" Sr. G) from Bethel Christian, Vaugn Nelson (6'-1" Jr. G) from Palmdale, Chad Skatevold (6'-1" Sr. G) from Immanuel Christian, Jason Tomlin (6'-1" Sr. G) from Quartz Hill, Jon Banks (6'-0" Sr. G) from Highland, Marvin Wright (5'-11" Sr. G) from Highland, Wendel Bonner (6'-1" Sr. G) from Highland, Peter Beaudin (6'-6" Jr. F) from Antelope Christian, Oliver Hayworth (6'-1" Jr. G) from Highland, Reggie Gray (6'-2" Sr. G) from Lancaster and Andrew Austin (6'-6" Sr. F) from Lancaster. We'd look for a few changes on the roster this weekend, but not many.

Sonora--Coached by Oscar Abreu, we'd look for mostly guys from Sonora High, including Marquis Worthy (6'-4" Sr. PF) who is expected to carry the team now that Jeffrey Berokoff will be playing at SDSU.

St. Mary's High School/Phoenix, AZ-- coached by Charlie Stidham, will probably feature Mike Schwertly (6'-5" Sr. PF), Jason Fontenet (5'-8" So. PG), and some others, but don't look to see Donnell Knight (6'-7" Sr. F/C) who has already committed to ASU and transferred to Corona Del Sol High in Phoenix for his senior season. Most of the team graduated last year, so look for a whole bunch of new faces.

Streetwise--coached by Chuck Horvath, look for many of the same players who attended the Spring Discovery Shootout. We have the old rosters somewhere, but just can't find them right now. We'll post it later.

Total Impact--coached by Sam Alipio, look for Total Impact's older kids to be playing in this one. We're sure that as soon as "Coach Sam" sees this, he'll send us the rosters. For now though, we won't guess.

Valley Slam-- How's this for a mix: David Gale (5'-10" Fr. PG/SG) Buckley Sherman Oaks, Craig Weinstein (5'-10" Fr. PG) North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, Adam Allegro (6'-5" So. F) from Agoura, Adam Drell (6'-6" Jr. PF) from Chatsworth, Darren Tarlow (6'-4" Sr. F) from West Hills Chaminade Prep, Harrison Schaen (6'-7" 8th gr. F/C) from St. Bonaventure in Orange County, Cody Pearson (6'-3" So. SG) from Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, Chris Williams (6'-8" Sr. C) from Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, Chad Garson (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF) from N.H Harvard-Westlake, and Jason Morrissette (6'-3" Jr. SG/SF) from LA Fairfax. Will Sheslow (6'-0" Fr. PG) from Montclair Prep was also scheduled to play, but it looks like he'll be with his Rockfish II team over at Dart Stamps' Southern Pacific Shootout at the Los Angeles Southwest College in Los Angeles, which is set for the same date as the Pump event, September 19-20.

West Valley--Bob Bramlett will be entering a team, and for now, we just don't have a clue who will be on it. We have the old roster, but it's anyone's guess whether it will be the same team.

See you there.
