Mike
Dunleavy Still Open
To Four Schools--(Sept. 22, 1998)
Mike Dunleavey, Jr (6'-7" Sr SG) from Portland Jesuit, looked great this weekend, even if he didn't eat enough pizza on Saturday night to put on some additional weights for Sunday's games. Mike played very well for his Pump-N-Run I team and they dominated Salpointe, a very good high school team and Salt Lake Metro on Saturday. He was banging in 3's, passing well, and occasionally doubling at the point when Lance Buoncristiani (5'-8" Sr. PG) from Galena was out.
Mike came down with his private workout coach Howard Avery who also coached the Pump-N-Run I team, and we had an hourlong discussion on Saturday night over at the Pump's house with Avery about a wide range of topics, none of which included Mike Dunleavy. Mike was also staying with brother Baker and Cameron Carr (6'-8" Sr. F) from West Linn over the weekend in Chatsworth, a good hourlong drive to Dominguez, and we spent some time with them on Saturday night as well, eating pizza and watching the USC football game on television. Later in the evening, Mike, Cameron and Baker got into a heavy pool game, and from what we saw, Michael would be well advised to stick to basketball, although Cameron has a mean bank shot, and if he decides not to play college ball, he could have a serious career as a pool. shark.:-0).
Mike is still seriously looking at Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Stanford, but we'd have to say at this point based upon our best sources, that it's between North Carolina and Stanford. Mike does intend to take four official visits, and has already had home visits from Duke, Stanford and North Carolina. He was very impressed by both Coach K (who came before dinnner) and by coach Montgomery (who apparently did stay for dinner and desert), and all of the coaches brought impressive videos as well. Personally, we'd like to see Mike at Stanford, where he would undoubtedly play alongside his Pump teammate Casey Jacobsen (6'-6" Sr. SG) who committed last weekend. They really don't play the same position, and we could easily see Mike or Casey at either the two or three spots next year.
