adidas/EBO
Sweet 16 Classic:
Additional Details, Schedules & More--(Sept. 10, 1998)
Yeah, yeah, we know, Mike Miller has already put up the schedules for the adidas/Elite Basketball Oranganization Sweet 16 Classic over at WestCoastHoops.com. But at the risk of being repetitive, and for those of you who haven't seen it, here are the details on the 1998 version of Mats Matsubara's great fall tournament.
The tournament will be held this weekend, September 12-13 at two locations in Fresno, CA (which is either northern or southern California, depending upon where you draw the line--for us it's SoCal :-)). The tournament will be held at Edison High and the Comptech Gym, which is located right next door to Edison High (actually it's a 1/2 block away, just look for the signs). To get to Edison High, you leave the airport (assuming you're flying). Go to McKinley and turn right (west), and get onto the 41 Fwy going south until you get to U.S. 99, going south. Take 99 South to Ventura, exit and turn right (west). Edison High will be on your left. If you're driving from LA, take 99 north to Fresno. Exit at Ventura and turn left. Go two miles approximately and eventually the school will appear on your left. Finally, if you get lost, Mats has provided a cell phone to call for an emergency bailout: (209) 270-0279.
So who's coming? Some pretty good teams, including EBO which is Mats' own team mostly from Fresno Washington Union except for some big guy from Alaska (Deshawn Stevenson, Carlos Boozer, Shammell Stallworth, Willie Johnson). There will also be two Rockfish teams, and while we're not sure who's on the second one, you can be that on the Rockfish I team you'll find most of next year's Cal Bear team including Shantay Legans, Nick Vander Laan from Sac., Brian Wethers, and some Cal hopefuls such as Dalron Johnson, Rafael Berumen and more. On the Rockfish II team, we'd expect to see Russell Lakey running the point, but details are a bit sketchy for now.
Pump-N-Run will also be sending a team coached by Dana Pump flying solo (David's not there--he's running a Double Pump tournament this weekend in, of all places, Florida--we'll have some details on that when he returns). Look to see Aaron Abrams, Bo Segberg, Kent Dennis, Jeremiah Turner perhaps, and some others. More later on them.
Others sending teams will be Oakland Slam-N-Jam (Justin Davis, Blandon Ferguson, Jovan Harris and this time Andrew Gooden who finally figured out which team to play for after playing for EBO in the Best of the Summer tournament), Central Cal Sports Express coached by George Albanez and featuring Nick Jone, BJ Ward, Tony Freeman, Al Williams, Joey Wallace and possibly JR Allen, although we thought he'd already left for prep school.
Also attending will be Colorado Superflow, the Sacramento Pacers, San Jose Select, Oakland Slam-N-Jam II, Bakersfield Heat, a team simply called Primerica, the Hustling Eagles, and the Central Valley Tar-Heels. Oh, and there will also be an EBO II team.

With two 8 team brackets, it's a little unclear why the Consolation teams actually get to play more games--for example, there's no game being played for third place between the losers of games 23 and 24, but then greater minds than we must have worked out the bracket, and there's usually a reason for everything. And it's probably designed to give the college coaches an extra look at the teams which are eliminated first, because it's pretty certain, at least from where we sit, EBO probably meet up with Pump N Run on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. while Oakland S & J will meet up with Rockfish I at the same time over at Comptech. But then you never know, right?
Lastly, for those interested, the tournament will be held under CIF rules but with a few modifications: Instead of 8 minute quarters, there will be two 16 minute halves, using an 8 minute warmup and a 4 minute half-time.
If you have any questions about the tournament, including where to stay (Mats recommends the Traveler's Inn, located at I-99 at East Jensen Ave., for $40.00 per night per room, Call (209) 237-6644, tell them EBO sent you), just call Darren Matsubara at (209) 275-4121 or Dan Linville at (209) 225-6874.
