Fall Hoops Classic:
Highlights, Day One, No. 1--(Sept. 12, 1998)
Here's some highlights from the Fall Hoops Classic, Day One.
As usual, the schedules were all screwed up, and there were a ton of changes. But some things are immutable. Like QBL beating Belmont Shore's II team. QBL is the usual array of the entire Artesia team, including the following players:
Andre Hazel
(5'-10" Jr. PG)
Marcus Crane (6'-3" So. G)
Malcolm Heusa (6'-5" So. G/F)
Jon Steffanson (6'-4" Fr. G)
Jason Kapono (6'-8" Sr. G/F/C)
Apolinar Fernandez (6'-9" So. F)
Ryan Reyes (6'-2" So. G)
Donte Hunter (6'-2" So. G)
Jack Martinez (6'-7" So. F)
Jamal Jones (6'-2" So. G)
Aaron Hamilton (6'-5" So. G/F)
Franklin Matos (6'-3" Fr. G)
Other than Jason, this is one of the youngest but truly loaded teams on the entire West Coast.
Belmont Shore's II team is a pretty talented squad of local guys as well:
Brian Baker
(5'-11" So. PG) Mater Dei
Wesley Stokes (5'-10" Jr. PG) Long Beach Poly High
Errick Craven (6'-2" So. G) Bishop Montgomery
Travon Bryant (6'-8" Jr. F/C) Long Beach Jordan
Derrick Craven (6'-2" So. G) Bishop Montgomery
Kevin Brown (6'-3" Jr. G) Westchester
Darren Peterson (6'-4" Sr. G) Long Beach Jordan
Ryan Mollins (6'-5" Jr. F) Loyola High
Jamaal Williams (6'-6" So. F) Corona Centennial
Dillon Hayes (6'-6" So. F) Tustin High
Artesia QBL did what it needed to do to get the job done. In the second game, Dinos' Belmont Shore I team beat Carson BBall by 20 points. Belmont Shore I features Casey's future Stanford backcourt mate, Julius Barnes (6'-1" Sr. SG) from Rowland Heights, as well as Shomari Sarpi (6'-9" Sr. F/C) from Pomona, Jamaal Barnes (6'-1" So. G) from Rowland, Eric Knight (6'-2" Sr. G) from Westchester, Denver Lopez (6'-1" Sr. G) from Nogales, Chris Clark (6'-6" Sr. F) from Glendora, Jack May (6'-7" Sr. PF) from Ayala, Michael Ahmad (6'-9" Sr. C) from Glendora, Chris Ferguson (6'-1" Sr. G) from Irvine, and Keyon Cooley (6'-7" Sr. F) from Long Beach Poly. We didn't get a look at the Carson roster, but our friend and correspondent, Jason Day was at this game, and hopefully, in the next few hours he'll be giving us some of the details of this game.
