Frank
Burlison's Point Guard List. . .
And A Few More From Our Own List--(Sept. 1, 1998)
Frank Burlison of the Orange County Register writes in today's column that "On the topic of point guards, here are the five best college prospects at the position among Southern California high school seniors (listed alphabetically): Julius Barnes (6-1, Rowland of Rowland Heights) Shantay Legans (5-11; Tito Maddox (6-4, Compton); Marcus Moore (6-3, Redondo Union of Redondo Beach); and James Wright (5-11, Manual Arts of Los Angeles)."
Well, we would add a couple of names to the list of senior point guards who rank among the best college prospects: Cayce Cook (5'-10" Sr. PG) from West Hills Chaminade; Leroy Dawson (6'-0" Jr. PG/SG) Los Angeles High; Kyle Dodd (6'-0" Jr. PG) Brea Olinda; Brandon Owens (5'-9" Jr. PG) Pacific Hills; Tony Dow (6'-0" Jr. PG) Huntington Beach Ocean View; Andre Porter (5'-11" Jr. PG) St. Augustine, SD; Trenell Eddings (5'-11" Jr. PG) Rialto Eisenhower; Jerry Inzunza (5'-10" Jr. PG) Fullerton Troy; B.J. Ward (6'-1" Jr. PG) Santa Clara; and Ash Knowlton (5'-10" Jr. PG) Clovis West.
Burlison also writes that Marquis Poole (6'-1" Sr. PG) from Centennial of Compton is "the most underrated college prospect at the position in the Southland". Well, we think there's no shortage of point guards who might qualify as "the most underrated" or certainly at the very least the "most under-recruited." Among them are:
Lanere Anderson (6'-0" Jr. PG)
Compton
Baron Baker (5'-11" Jr. PG) Fontana
Mark Cannon (5'-11" Jr. PG) L.A. Chatsworth
Gibran Garcia (5'-10" Jr. PG) Bishops
Rahnell Johnson (5'-8" Jr. PG) L.A. North Hollywood
Antuan King (6'-0" Jr. PG) L.A. Mid City Magnet
Eric Knight (6'-1" Jr. PG) Westchester
Gary Lenoir (6'-0" Jr. PG) Lynwood
Chris Livaccari (6'-3" Jr. PG/SG) Temecula Valley
Ryan Moreau (5'-11" Jr. PG) Fountain Valley
Tim Rahall (6'-1" Jr. PG/SG) Santa Margarita
Jonathan Stokes (6'-0" Jr. PG) Crenshaw
Robby Tanouye (5'-8" Jr. PG) Chaminade
Stanley Thorne (5'-10" Jr. PG/SG) L.A. Fairfax
Emmitt Washington (6'-0" Jr. PG/.SG) L.A. Palisades
Alex Will (6'-0" Jr. PG/SG) Villa Park
Rashad Winston (5'-11" Jr. PG) L.A. Grant
David Word (5'-10" Jr. PG/SG) Long Beach Jordan
And that's only about half of the list we could think of among this year's rising seniors. Sure, not all of them are of the caliber of a Legans, Maddox or Barnes. But then they're all a step above the "average" good player, and most of them should be recruited this year.
