One Man's Opinion: Top 10 Wing
Guards Feature Two SoCal Guys--(Aug. 26, 1998)

Keith Cavanaugh from FastBreak magazine in an article posted at ESPN's college basketball site, writes about his Top 10 high school senior wing guards in the country this year. Recognizing that this is only one man's opinion, it's still impressive that from among the 10, two (Casey Jacobsen and Brian Wethers) SoCal players were among them, and at least one other played for a SoCal based traveling team (Mike Dunleavy). Here's what Cavanaugh had to say about each of them:

Our No. 3 wing guard is Glendora, Calif., native Casey Jacobsen, another all-tournament performer at the Tournament of Champions in May who opted to take his show overseas in July. The 6-6 Jacobsen helped the United States to, win the gold medal in the World Youth Cup Games in Moscow, teaming with fellow prep standouts Tahj Holden, Nick Horvath and others. Jacobsen, one of the premier shooters in the class and a top passer as well, was getting big-time interest in the early going from Duke, but could be Stanford-bound. Kentucky rounds out his top three choices.

At No. 8 is another up-and-comer on the summer scene, Oregon's Mike Dunleavy Jr. The son of the NBA coach, Dunleavy got some big-time attention at both the adidas/ABCD Camp and the Big-Time Tournament in Las Vegas. He may be the wing Duke goes hard after instead of Jacobsen. Dunleavy can play the coast-to-coast game and has great hops and athleticism. Kentucky and Stanford are also pursuing Dunleavy.

At No. 9 is another West Coast standout, 6-4 Brian Wethers of Murrietta Valley, Calif. One of the most athletic wings in the class, Wethers has great court smarts and a classic stroke. He lists Cal, Michigan, Cincinnati, USC and N.C. State among his top choices.

In case you're interested the complete list looks like this:

1. Keith Bogans --DeMatha, Hyattsville, MD
2. Joe Forte--DeMatha, Hyattsville, MD
3. Casey Jacobsen, Glendora, CA
4. Rod Grizzard, Central Park, Birmingham, ALA
