Impact At YBOA Nationals--(Aug. 3, 1998)
According to Sam Alipio, who runs/coaches the Total Impact basketball program, the 16-U team did pretty well at the YBOA Nationals. Representing California (and more importantly all of SoCal), Torrance based Total Impact Boys 16 year old team recently competed in the Youth Basketball of America National tournament held in Orlando, Florida July 26-August 1. More than 100 teams, including teams from Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, and teams from 35 states competed. In the National skills competition individual honors were earned by Chadwick's High sophomore shooting guard, Peter McCaslin. McCaslin captured the Hot shot contest and out-shot twenty two opponents in the 16 division. Also, St. Monica's High point guard Jamayne "Spud" Potts placed second in the finals of the 3 point contest among 22 opponents, missing the title by only two baskets. Both guards combined for a 36 point total per game average over 6 games played.
And we assume from the lack of news on this subject that Total Impact didn't win the whole enchilada, but they did have a great time, and played against some of the best teams in the nation, and from what we've seen of YBOA basketball, it's quite an accomplishment just to qualify for the nationals. Congratulations to Sam's Total Impact 16-U team.
