National Championships: Illinois Beats
Belmont Shore For Title--(Aug. 2, 1998)
We weren't there today to witness it, but we just heard from Dinos Trigonis, who called to say that his Belmont Shore squad lost to a very strong Illinois Warriors squad by a final score of 70-61. Dinos said that Albert Miller had about 25 points, and played great, and Tito Maddox finished with 15 points as well, but was somewhat limited by the 1-2-2 zone defense which the Illinois guys ran, which effectively closed out the lanes, and even Tito can get tired too. Dinos said that Matt Lottich (6'-4" Jr. G) from Chicago Mahomet Seymore High had a great game as did Maurice Pitts (6'-8" Sr. F) from Chicago Hales Franciscan.
Unfortunately, the High Five folks had some sort of problem with their photocopy machine, and they were unable to get out the stats for any of the games today. Hopefully they kept the original printouts and will get us copies tomorrow so that we can post the stats.
In the third place game, QBL beat SCA by one point. SCA was ahead with only a few seconds to go, and then committed the cardinal sin: They fouled Josh Kroenke (6'-5" Prep. SG) who went to the line and hit both ends of a 1 and 1 to give QBL another dramatic finish, this time for the win.
In the fifth place game, High Five America, playing with Chinese national sensation Yao Ming (7'-5" Sr. C) from Shanghai, defeated the much-touted and very well coached New York Riverside Church. Again, we don't have the score of that game, but we'll get the complete results tomorrow.
