Gilbert
Arenas To Stay At Grant;
Will Visit Kansas State--(Aug. 31, 1998)
We spoke with Gilbert's dad, Gil Sr., and he tell us that Gilbert Arenas (6'-3" Sr. G) will officially enroll next week at Grant High in Van Nuys, and will not transfer to Sylmar for his senior year. Gil Sr. told us that the primary consideration in Gilbert's decision to stay at Grant was to insure continuity in his academics. We suspect that if Gil was a junior rather than a senior this year, that he might make the jump to the Spartans. But this isn't his junior year, and so at least for now it looks like Gil will stay at Grant until graduation. And we also suspect that by the time the season starts he and Grant coach Howie Levine will have settled whatever differences of opinion might have existed concerning Gil's summer league play for the Spartans.
Finally, Gil has scheduled an official visit to Kansas State on September 18th, so it doesn't look like he'll make it to the 1998 dada Long Beach Fall Hoops Classic. Gil is still looking at De Paul, Arizona, Arizona State, Michigan, Washington State and Washington, and apparently all of these schools are still looking at him, some more strongly than others. He doesn't expect to sign in the fall, and will take the maximum number of official visits.
