Slam-N-Jam NIT Semifinals Today--(July 24, 1998)

We didn't make it over to the NIT yesterday because we spent most of the day at the Double Pump adidas Best of Summer, but we can report that No. 2-seeded Southern California All-Stars and Greater Compton are among the field of 16 still alive as second-round play in the championship bracket begins today in the Slam-N-Jam National Invitational Tournament at Long Beach State.

Greater Compton will take on Team Nebraska at 8:00 a.m. this morning at CSULB in the Gold Mine.

Compton features Tito Maddox (6'-4" Sr. PG) who had an outstanding shoe camp experience and is playing the best ball of his life, Donnie Legans (6'-1" Sr. G), James Cummings (5'-10" Sr. G), Jeremiah Thompson (6'-5" Jr. F) a nice rebounder and post up player, Darius Sanders (6'-5" Fr. F), Terry Hosendove (6'-5" Sr. F), a very active and athletic player who drives well and is shooting great from inside and out, Ellis Miles (6'-7" Jr. F), another post up guy, Demetrius Clark (6'-2" Jr. G), David Dixon (5'-9" Jr. G), Leroy Dawson (6'-2" Jr. G), Antuane McGinnis (6'-6" Jr. F), Marquis Poole (6'-3" Sr. C) from Centennial, and Lanere Anderson (6'-0" Sr. G).

Team Nebraska is a very tough squad, which features Cody Gallatin (6'-0" Sr. G) form Fremont, Curtis Ogba (5'-10" Sr. G) from Omaha's Bryan High, Chad Sievers (6'-2" Jr. G) from Valley, Kevin Clanton (5'-10" Sr. G) from Mt. Michael, K.C. Foote (6'-0" Sr. G) from Kearney, Jeff Tesmer (6'-2" Sr. G) from Grand Isle, Kevin Kobs (6'-5" Sr. F) from Omaha Burke, Tatrick Moylan (6'-4" Sr. F) also from Mt. Michael, Danny Lund (6'-8" Jr. F/C) from Omaha Burke, Justin Pierce (6'-4" Sr. F) from Lin. Pius X, Jared Calver (6'-8" Sr. C) from Lin. East, and Jared Anderson (6'-5" Sr. F) from Omaha Bryan.

SCA will take on Texas Blue Chip at 11 a.m. Texas also plays in the Best of Summer at 4:00 p.m. for it's first round game of single elimination at Dominguez.

SCA, comprised mostly of Dominguez players, including Keith Kincaide (6'-4" Sr. G), Tyson Chandler (7'-0" So. C)--who hasn't been at the early games, because his mother reportedly had a baby and he went back to San Bernardino to be with her--, Keith Brooks (6'-5" Jr. F), Keylon fortune (5'-8" So. PG), Jason Haley (6'-0" Sr. G), Cedric Thompson (6'-5" Jr. F), Mika McKinney (6'-2" Jr. G), Steve Moore (6'-3" Jr. G), James Jackson (5'-9" Sr. G), and Donald James (5'-8" Sr. G). The coaches of SCA are, of course, Pat Barrett and Russell Otis.

The Long Island Panthers will meet the Dallas Dirty Dozen I at 9:15 a.m. , and you can also catch Long Island over at Dominguez at 2:50 when they will take on the winner of Inland v. FOH II.

No. 1 seed New York Riverside Church will play a yet to be determined opponent at 12:15 p.m. The winners will advance to tonight's quarterfinals, scheduled to be played in the West Gymnasium at 5:15 p.m.
