adidas Big
Time Vegas Tournament
Pump & Run Team Rosters--(July 15, 1998)
Since the adidas Big Time Las Vegas tournament gets underway today, there's really no better time than now to feature some of the teams that will be participating. And because this tournament is organized by Double Pump, it's probably appropriate to lead off with their team rosters.
Pump & Run 1
The Pump & Run 1 team is coached by Rob Alexander, the head basketball coach at Canyon High School in Anaheim. The players are drawn from all over SoCal, and for this tournament, the team will carry a roster of nine players. They are:
Cayce Cook (5'-9" Sr. PG) from
West Hills Chaminade Prep
Gilbert Arenas (6'-4" Sr. G/F) from Van Nuys Grant High
Aaron Abrams (6'-4" Sr. G) from Rancho Buena Vista High in
Vista
Kent Dennis (6'-3" Sr. G) from Reseda Cleveland High
Brandon Moorer (6'-7" Sr. F) from Los Angeles Manual Arts
High
Cameron Carr (6'-8" Sr. F) from West Linn High in West Linn,
Oregon
Mike Dunleavy (6'-7" Sr. SG/SF) from Portland Jesuit,
Portland, Oregon
Bo Segeberg (6'-8" Sr. F/C) from Serrano High in Wrightwood
Eric Rowher (6'-8" Sr. C) from Burbank High in Burbank
This is a very talented group featuring the top three shooting guards on the West Coast-- two of those three are probably in the top 10 shooting guards in this years entire senior class. Mike Dunleavy is a national talent who has a deadly stroke out to three point range and is very consistent; he runs well in the open court and has great court vision. Gilbert Arenas is probably the latest and hottest sensation on the West Coast, and is also the best pure athlete among the players on this team. Gil's defense has been questioned, but we have found that in "exposure" or non-competition settings he tends to play much looser on defense than he does during a regular season. On this team he will more than likely share the point responsibilities with Cayce Cook, who has vastly improved his game from last year, and he's now a solid point with very few weaknesses in his game. Kent Dennis is one of SoCal's top scoring guards and with a body like Schea Cotton, strong and quick, he's a potent threat always. At the forward spots, Brandon, Cameron and Dunleavy (when he's not out shooting) are all top-flight solid D-1 prospects. Rowher and Segeberg have begun to develop solid games, and will ably hold down the post positions.
Pump & Run 2/4
The old Pump & Run 2 team has now suddenly become the Pump & Run 4 team, with the addition of the LA Hilltoppers teams to the Pump & Run group. So we'll refer to the old #2 team as #4 and the new #2 team will just be #2. Got that straight? Good.
Pump & Run 4 is coached by Dave Goosen, the head basketball coach at Venice High in Los Angeles. The team includes:
Dave Merriweather (6'-0" Jr.
G) from Los Angeles Venice High
Skyler Wilson (5'-10" So. PG) from La Quinta High in Indio
Gregg Smith (6'-10" Sr. C) from Cottage Grove High in
Cottage Grove
Shaun Michel (6'-1" Fr PG) from Simi Valley High in Simi
Valley
Brett Michel (6'-6" So SF) from Simi Valley High in Simi
Valley
Earl Lewis (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) from Gardena Serra
Chris Bennett (6'-8" Sr. F) from Altadena Marshall High
Aerick Sanders (6'-7" So. C) from Gardena Serra
The heart of this young team is Skyler Wilson, as solid at the point as any senior in this year's class. He's quick, has good court vision, makes good decisions, and in two years will be a major D-1 player. Dave Merriweather and Shaun Michel will also share the duties at point and off-guard. Shaun has improved his game and composure as he's matured, and the pressure situations from last year's season have only hardened him and made him a better player. Brother Brett has the potential to be a great shooter, but has been hampered by consistency problems. Earl Lewis is the other shooter and he's a hard working, tough rebounding player with good size and speed. Bennett is a strong, hardworking 4, a good athlete who has the potential to be a D-1 player. Finally, Sanders, while still young and thin has consistently been improving his game over the last year, and was one of the most improved players, so much so that many considered him to be worthy of being named to the "Best of the Best".
Pump & Run 2 (new team)
The Pump & Run 2 team is really the Los Angeles Hilltoppers coached by Ladell Hill, Jr., assisted by F. McGilvery. Their roster originally included several of the guys who are now on P&R 4 (the old 2 team), so there still could be some shifting and moving of players during the Big Time Vegas tourney. Here's who was "officially" listed on the Hilltoppers/Pump & Run 2 team, at least as of yesterday:
Eric Arevalo (5'-6"
Sr. PG) from South Gate High
Gary Lenoir (6'-0" Sr. PG) from Lynwood High
Adrian Quintero (6'-2" Sr. G) from Lynwood High
Nicole Uy (6'-4" Sr. G/F) from Los Angeles Belmont High
Ronald Johnson (6'-4" Sr. F) from South Gate High
Earl Lewis (6'-5"
Sr. SG/SF) from Gardena Serra *
Aerick Sanders (6'-7" So. C) from Gardena Serra*
Marvin Perez (6'-5" Sr. F) from Torrance Bishop Montgomery
Mike Bell (6'-6" Sr. PF) from Canoga Park High
Aaron Thomas (6'-6" Sr. PF) from Pomona High
Lamar Lawrence (6'-7" Sr. F) who attends prep school
Troy Tharp (6'-8" Sr. C) from Battleground, Washington
Chris Williams (6'-8" Sr. C) from Sherman Oaks Notre Dame
* note, Sanders and Lewis will be playing for the P&R 4 team as noted above, and this will still leave each team with 8-10 players, and actually we're not certain which of the #2 guys will actually be at the Big Time. We're pretty certain that Gary Lenoir will not be in any condition to play and may not be going, as he very badly injured his back in yesterday's final round of games at the West Coast All-Star Camp when he fell directly on his back. After being helped off the floor, he was responding to treatment well, but was believed to have badly bruised his spine, so we don't expect that he'll play with this team either.
We'll have some additional rosters shortly. Stay tuned.
