Sondheimer
Finds Michael Goldman.
Film At 11!--(July 28, 1998)
Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times Valley edition frequently picks up on new talent that others have overlooked. We'd have to be the first ones to admit, we haven't seen any of Calabasas High's summer league games, but if we can get to one this week, we're going to try to find out who this kid Michael Goldman (6'-1" Sr. PG) is.
According to Sondheimer:
. . .Goldman has shown this summer he's ready to join the likes of Gilbert Arenas, Cayce Cook and Kent Dennis as one of the region's top point guards.
Er, um, ok. We don't know a thing about Goldman (yet) but we do know that Kent Dennis is not a point guard, and neither is Gilbert, really. They're both 2's, no doubt about it. Now Cayce Cook, he's a point guard. Details, details, details.
Sondheimer wrote a pretty nice little piece about Goldman this last Sunday. In it he noted that "With one week remaining in the summer basketball season, senior point guard Michael Goldman of Calabasas High has emerged as a top point guard."
Apparently, he was academically ineligible most of last season, and has "limited varsity experience" but has managed to get a lot of time this summer, so much so that according to Sondheimer, Goldman has "become the talk of the Westlake summer league."
What are they saying about him? Well, that he's 6'-1". That he's got long arms. That he's got excellent jumping ability. That he won the dunk competition at the War on the Floor. [Oops, another contest we missed!]. That he's a good shooter, has nice range, and is unselfish. That he scored 34 points in a game against Newbury Park (with or without Brian Polen?).
"He plays like the modern Bob Cousy," Westlake Coach Gary Grayson told Sondheimer. "He'll come down and throw a perfect behind-the-head pass a la Cousy. He's got eyes in the back of his head. He makes everybody else look good."
We can't wait to check this one out. Sounds like Calabasas could have a pretty good season. We're looking forward to it.
