Gilbert Arenas. . . Plays. . . And Plays. . . And Plays--(July 2, 1998)
So much for the supposed "ultimatum" issued to Gil Arenas by Grant coach Howie Levine. Gilbert Arenas (6'-3" Sr. SG/PG) played for Sylmar.
And he showed up again on Thursday in the Championship round and played again. And assuming Sylmar won (we left before the game), he'll play again on Friday, before leaving for ABCD camp on July 6.
We had a chance to spend some time with Gil and his dad, Gil, Sr., and as far as they were concerned, the War on the Floor tournament was "just another game." Neither Gil nor his father said a word about what will happen come September, and if we had to guess, we'd say that Gil will be staying at Grant, and that by the time the season rolls around, and all the summer brouhaha about "transfers" wears off, that Gil will be welcomed back to the Lancers team.
Gil said that he had just talked that afternoon to Washington and Washington State, and was interested in them both. He's also getting pursued pretty heavily by USC, Oklahoma State and Kansas, some schools in the east (he'll say more after ABCD about them), and from virtually every Pac-10, WAC and WCC school around. Gil was originally pretty high on Stanford, but with the word that Julius Barnes (6'-1" Sr. 6-1 PG) from Rowland Heights has committed, he doesn't think they'll be after him, but we'll see what develops.
