Dominguez Misses The War On The Floor;
Other Results From Tuesday--(July 1, 1998)

Wow, Kenny Brunner must be having a really big defense for his upcoming trial later this week. The Daily News reported yesterday that the reason Dominguez, last year's champions of the War on the Floor Tournament didn't show was because their coach Russell Otis was busy helping Brunner's lawyers prepare for his defense against criminal charges. Well, on Tuesday, the Dons were scheduled to play Crespi in the first game at 10:30 am. But they were no-shows.

Actually, we have no idea where the Dons were, but if you also had a chance to check out the schedule for yesterday's Carson/Compton Slam 'N Jam tournament put on by Issy Washington over at Carson and Compton High Schools, you might have noticed that Dominguez was also scheduled to play St. Bernards at 1:15 p.m. at Carson High. We don't know if they made that game either, but we're willing to bet that the Dons just decided it was too much driving, and after forfeiting the first game at the War on the Floor, why bother?

So what else happened at the War on the Floor? Well, the LA Times presence actually did some good, because they got out most of the results this morning. Here's what they had:

10:30 a.m. Crespi 2, Dominguez 0: Forfeit by Dominguez.

12:00 p.m Clovis West 62, Canoga Park 49--The Hunters (1-1) suffered from two Clovis West scoring spurts and could not recover. Jammie Harris had 18 points for Canoga Park. Clovis West (2-0) formed a 13-0 run to take a 15-4 lead in the opening minutes and led, 34-22, at halftime. Canoga Park started fast in the second half and closed to 42-40 on a tip-in by Mike Gomes. But Clovis West put together a 14-0 run to take a 56-40 lead with 5:13 remaining.

1:10 p.m. Buchanan 72, Granada Hills 46: Point guard Jason Perry made eight three-pointers and finished with 30 points against Granada Hills, which is 0-2 in the tourney. Perry's four three-pointers helped Buchanan, which is 2-0, build a 37-20 halftime lead.

2:15 p.m. Sylmar 46, Kennedy 35: Sylmar, last year's 3A City Champions who have now moved up to 4A status, looked outstanding at times, not so good or even pretty mediocre at other times. Sylmar, behind great play from George Wrighster and Jeremiah Turner took a 14-4 lead but then gave it back, allowing Kennedy to go on an 11-4 run. Jeremiah Turner had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and he's a pretty fun player to watch, slashing, driving and shooting a pretty nice j out to about 20'. Turner also had six boards in the first half and scored five of his team's first 10 second-half points. Anthony Cosby was the high scorer for Kennedy with 10, and Kennedy is now 0-2 in pool play.

3:20 p.m. Compton Centennial 87, Taft 68-- Apparently, it was Taft who had trouble with the traffic, not the guys who came from all the way across the city from Compton. Taft started without two of its players, point gurard Eric Alvarez and Derrick McCoy, who were reportedly stuck in traffic, and got off to a slow start, trailing by 10 at the half. Taft never got closer than nine points in the second half. Raja Boykins scored 19, Eric Bowen had 16 and Ronald Gray added 10 for Taft. Alvarez and McCoy fijnally showed up for the last eight minutes of the game. We don't know anything yet about Centennial, and are going to have to find out about these guys. They are 2-0 in the tournament.

4:25 p.m. Cleveland 54, Santa Monica 40: Cleveland looks impressive with Kenny Mason, Kent Dennis and Brian Smith, who combined for 41 points. Cleveland is now 2-0 in pool play. Mason scored 21 points, including five three-point shots. Dennis scored 10 of his 11 points in the second half and Smith had 9.

5:30 p.m. Notre Dame 55, Valencia 50: Cody Pearson scored 20 points in the first half and the Knights won their second consecutive game. Pearson, who will be a sophomore, was Notre Dame's sixth-man last year but he'll be a starter this season. Royce Minor scored 21 points and Eskias McDaniels added 13 for Valencia which is now 0-2 in the tourney.

6:50 p.m. Burbank 2, Inglewood 0: Coach Ron Quarterman's Bulldogs, who are 1-1 in the tourney, got a forfeit when Inglewood didn't show up. Maybe everyone was out proctoring Bradley Jackson's final exams. Who knows. At least everyone had enough time to go get a real meal between games.

7:55 p.m. Harvard-Westlake 59, Montclair Prep 38: Harvard-Westlake, behind some good play from Russell Lakey (5'-11" Jr. PG), Dan Kinzer (6'-7" Sr. F/C), Eric Geffner (6'-5" Jr. SG/SF) and the rest of the crew of juniors including Alex Holmes (6'-4" Jr. F), hammered Montclair Prep. Lakey had a tough time with the refs in the first half, picking up three quick fouls, and his fourth just a little more than halfway through the second half, and he didn't shoot very well, going only 2 for 12, but he did distribute the ball well to his teammates. Eric Geffner (6'-5" Jr. SG/SF) had a 16 points, and big guy Alex Holmes, fresh from football, had 13 points. Montclair's Jason Anderson (6'-7" Sr. C/F) from England, should be called "Big Project." He had never played organized high school ball prior to last year, and this year, he's being asked to shoulder the entire team. Montclair is going to struggle this year, but Anderson, whose real game is soccer could be a big-time sleeper for some Mid D-I schools, and he should be seen.

9:00 p.m. Chatsworth 61, Simi Valley 57. Chatsworth pulled off a big upset in this one, but then it didn't really look as though Simi was trying. But don't tell that to the Chancellors. Chatsworth led by as many as 16 points in the second half, but then Simi woke up and closed it to 4 at the end. Ronald Ruffin and Marlik Morris each scored 15 points for Chatsworth, and Adam Drell (6'-5" Jr. F) had a great game, as did Marc Cannon with 13. Rafael Berumen, who was out of the opening game in the tourney missed the opening game of the tournament with a leg injury, scored 21 points for Simi Valley 1-1.
