Cops Investigate Another Punching Incident--(July 24, 1998)
Remember Adir Levy (6'-1" Sr. G) from Grant High in Van Nuys from last season? The name might not roll off the tip of your tongue because Adir was a good, if streaky shooter who had some consistency problems. But the name should ring a bell because of the infamous punching incident which took place at another high school this last season, in which an opponent sucker punched Adir while the teams were lining up to shake hands following the game. The punch broke more than a few bones in Adir's face, and more importantly ended his season and prompted the early demise of Grant from the playoffs. Sure, Gilbert Arenas still managed about 63 points by himself against Crenshaw, but with Adir out and some of Grant's other shooters cold, there was no chance.
Punching in San Fernando Valley basketball has once again reared its ugly head. The LA Times reported Tuesday that police are investigating an incident in which an Alemany High boys' basketball player allegedly punched a referee during a summer basketball game last week at L.A. Baptist High. The player struck official Dave White following a foul call during a summer league game last Wednesday, LAPD Det. Kevin Jenks said. White, who serves as a pastor in Valencia, is the son of former Canyon High principal Bill White. Robert Gebauer, Alemany's vice principal, said Tuesday the player is facing disciplinary action from the school. The Southern Section office in Cerritos is expected to receive a report on the incident, and we can bet that the unnamed player won't be doing any playing for Coach Darryl McDonald any time soon.
