Scoring Highlights And Lowlights--(July 17, 1998)

New Lows: After scoring the first four points in their game against Team Indiana on Thursday, the team from Seal Beach here in SoCal was outscored 47-5 the rest of the first half. Seal Beach scored seven points in the first two minutes of the second half, but then only scored five more the rest of the way, losing, 95-21. On Wednesday, they lost 81-41 to Virginia Select International. We can't wait to see how they did today against the Oakland Hot Shots. Could they possibly get worse?

New Highs: Seven teams scored more than 100 points on the first day of play Wednesday, with EBO Fresno (Calif.) and DC Assault (Md.) eclipsing the previous record for highest winning score. The Brewster Packers set the record of 119 last year, but EBO Fresno had 123 and DC Assault 120. On Thursday, the Dallas Dirty Dozen II scored 108 against ABC Hoops, the Arizona Heat and Illinois Fire both scored 105 in their respective games, and more importantly also on Thursday, EBO scored 121, again breaking the old record by two with the win over the Las Vegas Panthers, who only managed 61 points in the losing effort. QBL (Jason Kapono and the Artesia guys) also had a high scoring game, hitting 103 against the Nestles team. LA Rockfish also broke the century mark, scoring 101 on Wednesday in their opening game against Squires Powhatan, and the Florida Flash II also proved that they could score more than a hundred, hitting for 105 against the Bridgeport Invasion.

Getting mad, or getting even: Central Cal Sports Express lost its first two games in pool play on Wednesday and Thursday, losing by 5 points on Wednesday to Franklin Covey Express of Utah 71-66, and then losing another squeaker on Thursday to the Michigan Mustangs, 83-75. But today, in the final game of pool play, CCSE came back with a vengeance, keeping their hopes alive of advancing, if not to the Open Tourney, then certainly to the "A" Tourney. CCSE blew away the Wrecking Crew 120-65.

From the Friday Las Vegas Journal Review: " A day after shattering a backboard at the Las Vegas High auxiliary gym, Divon Clifton of the New Orleans Jazz was still a bit awestruck. "It was really weird," said the 6-foot-4 Clifton. "I wasn't expecting it. We were killing the goal all day, and I got up and kind of yanked it and it popped." Clifton said he never had shattered a backboard and didn't expect a repeat performance. "I think it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience," he said."
