Double Pump Best Of Summer
All Tournament Selections--(July 26, 1998)
We were asked by Double Pump to pick an All-Tournament Team, and both we and Mike Miller turned in our lists. Mike only had 10 players on his list, and being the homie that he is (and we say that with all the greatest affection for Mike), he picked a player for the MVP of the tournament who wasn't even in the final, and who's only 5'-5".!!
We might agree with Mike that this 5'-5" player deserves to be given special recognition, because he's a major talent, with probably the best handle of anyone at the Best of Summer. Heck, he got invited to adidas ABCD Camp, and he's only a junior for goodness sakes. And did we mention that he's only 5'-5"?
But All-Tournament?? We just can't go with that one, especially after seeing the way the entire Jazz team played in the final. Nope, Avery Queen (5'-5" Jr. PG) of the Inland team does deserve "All-tournament" honors, maybe even "super all team." Maybe the best point guard (and then Chris Duhon probably has him beat) but not the best overall player. Will he sell tickets and be a great entertainer in college, possibly at UCLA if Lavin really is pursuing him? You bet. Was he the best player in the tournament. Probably not. But we have to say that Queen was the most fun to watch. He's all muscle, solid at 5'-5", and he's got that great tattoo as well. This kid can slash, drive, and we saw him pop 5 threes in the game against the Jazz, so you know he can shoot too. He's got one of the quickest releases we've seen, and his mechanics are excellent. This kid is going to be a major prospect, the next Mugsy or Spudd. The only thing we didn't see him do was dunk, but we're sure he can do it.
Actually our list and Michael's differed little, except that ours was about three times as long as his. The Double Pump folks used both of our recommendations although they did leave off a couple from each of our lists. Here's who made the All Tournament Team. Remember, there were a lot of teams, so this is a fairly long list, and it doesn't include many teams or players who clearly deserved to get some form of special recognition. Anyway, here goes:
Jon Cox--Team Philly | DeShawn Stevenson--EBO | Avery Queen--Inland |
Roderick Johnson--Inland | Chris Leanza--Abby AC | Brian Host--Brewster |
Jonathan Bender--Jazz | Ronald Dupree--Jazz | Chris Duhon--Jazz |
Jason Blair--Arizona Heat | Andrea Agauyo--Arizona Heat | Luke Ridnour--Brewster |
Gene Woodward--CAYA | Jonathan Sanders--Colo. Jam | Reggie Johnson--Derek Smith |
Marcus Shropshire--Ft. Worth | Lance
Buoncristiani--Galena, No. Nevada, Pump & Run I (and a couple of other teams too!) |
Eddie Griffin--Hunting Park |
Jamal Crawford--FOH I | B.J. Grove--Pump & Run | Gilbert Arenas-- Pump & Run |
Andre Williams--KC Act | Fab Fisher--Long Island Panthers | Russell Lakey--Rockfish |
Jave Meade--Madison Broncos | Abe Kaita--Madison Broncos | Brian Sigafoos--Newark Rams |
Louvon Sneed--Newark Rams | Dermarr Johnson--DC Assault | David Holmes--DC Assault |
Troyce Haynesworth--DC Assault | Brian Boddicker--Texas 17's | DeMarcus Watson--Texas Bluechip |
Jason Boyd--Valentinos | Travis Watson--Virginia Select | Danny Lubinsky--Mira Costa |
Again, these lists are somewhat arbitrary, as we only selected players we'd seen (or at least thought we'd seen. . . after all this basketball, we can't be sure of anything right about now). We're sure we overlooked some great guys, but not everyone can be "All-Tournament."
