Brunner Bound Over For Trial--(July 16, 1998)
Kenny Brunner, formerly of Dominguez High, who originally committed to Fresno State, then changed his mind, went to Georgetown, was removed from the team after 16 games for unspecified disciplinary reasons, then returned to Fresno, but never played a game before being kicked out for being involved in a bizarred samurai sword incident with another teammate for which he now faces criminal charges in Fresno, was arraigned Monday and bound over for trial for attempted murder and armed robbery of LA City College coach Michael A. Miller. Brunner's co-defendant, LaDale Lunnie, an LACC student was also arraigned and formally bound over for trial.
On the Friday of the Memorial Day weekend Brunner allegedly robbed Miller in his LACC office at the gym of more than $1500 in cash. He allegedly pointed a handgun at Miller's chest, demanded money, and then pulled the trigger. The gun did not go off. Brunner and his alleged accomplice, Lunnie were arrested later that night and Brunner has been in jail ever since, unable to post the $500,000 bail.
The case took a more bizzare twist about two weeks ago, when during a preliminary hearing, Miller and a basketball scout testified that they couldn't positively identify Brunner as the perpetrator, even though both had previously identified him from mug shots. The assistant District Attorney handling the case has acknowledged that without the eyewitness identification of Brunner, it will be difficult to obtain a conviction.
